We reported on a leak last month that suggested that Google's Chrome OS would finally be gaining support for the company's Play Store, hinting that it's a feature that could be announced at the company's I/O conference. Well, as it happens, the company did confirm the feature at I/O, but surprisingly, it didn't make a big deal out of it. The fact that Google didn't raise its trumpet to announce this feature is a bit strange, as it's something most Chrome OS users would have been happy to see long ago. It could have been simply pulled from the keynote due to time, which is suggested by the fact that a session description claims that it was properly announced: Today we announced that we’re adding... Planning to stay in for Valentine’s Day? If you have a Chromecast TV dongle, Google is willing to cover the cost of your movie rental for the night. The Valentine’s Day gift comes in the form of a $6 credit you can use for a movie (or anything else) on Google’s Play Store. Cashing in on Google’s Valentine’s Day largess is easy. Visit the Chromecast Offers page, select the $6 deal, and you’ll soon be shopping at the Play Store. A deal like this is a great way to get Chromecast users talking to friends and family about the device, so it makes sense that Google would give it a try, but the timing makes one wonder if Google is feeling some pressure from the Vudu Spark TV stick. Walmart is selling... Read more...
When anti-virus / anti-malware mobile apps began hitting the market a handful of years ago, I couldn't have imagined wanting to install one. After all, who wants to install anything that will use up some of their phone's precious resources? Well, times have changed, as I'm starting to believe that those who download many apps - especially from unknown developers - should consider grabbing a protection app. If you need a good reason, we can use Avast's brand-new example. The security firm recently investigated an issue involving a trio of apps that were available via the Google Play Store. Normally, even a shady app won't get that much attention, but these definitely did. In the case of an app... Read more...
Google enjoyed surpassing Apple long ago with regards to shipping Android devices (it currently sits at about 75%), and today, it can gloat about having the more active app store, too. However, where Apple's concerned, there's usually more than meets the eye, and depending on your perspective, it still places first - where it counts. During Q2, Google's Play store generated 10% more downloads, but it reported less than half the revenue; Google sits at about ~$45 million, Apple at ~$100 million. Part of Google's boost came from India and Brazil, the latter which now joins India and Russia to sit in the top 5 countries for both Apple's and Google's respective app stores, in terms of overall downloads.... Ahead of Google's IO conference slated to occur later this week, Android Police has acquired and broken-down the latest APK for Google's "Play Services" and have stumbled on some very interesting game-related findings. The rollout for the latest version (3.1.36) is happening now, but is apparently very slow (none of my devices have received it, yet) - most users are currently running 3.0.27. According to this article, the strings file has more than doubled from 300 to 700 between these versions, so 3.1 is a major update indeed. While there are multiple things introduced here, what's most interesting is the new section for games, including an option that will at the very least allow other Android... Read more...
When you download that banking app to your tablet or smartphone, do you ever wonder if it’s legitimate? Security software publisher Kaspersky Lab recently found some fake banking apps on the Google Play Store, which Google promptly removed upon being alerted. The fraudulent apps are for Russian banks in this case.   This Russian app is a Trojan that can steal a user's bank login info. Stunningly, it wasn't getting a very good average rating in the Play Store before it was removed. Image Credit: Kaspersky The apps that were found in the Play Store on December 12th (and deleted on December 13th, after Kaspersky contacted Google) were downloaded numerous times, suggesting...
