It'll soon be known as the summer of Haswell, and if you haven't heard all about Intel's latest platform, be sure to dive into our review here. Once you've convinced yourself that you've got to get one of your own, have a look at Origin PC. The company has just announced that it's shipping machines with Intel's 4th-gen CPUs in its GENESIS, MILLENNIUM, and CHRONOS desktops and EON laptops. The company is promising around 15% better performance from the refreshed rigs, and it'll also toss in a free copy of GRID 2 with any Haswell-equipped machine. There's also support for 4K video, improved battery life, more overclocking and bragging rights. So, are you in?... Read more...
Buy yourself a high-end, boutique gaming system, and you’re sure to find some swag in the box. It may be a slick mousepad or T-shirt, or you might even score a few free games. But if your next system is an EON17-SLX laptop from Origin, you’ll be getting $500 worth of gaming gear, including a mouse, a headset, and an Origin PC messenger bag to store your new rig and accessories. Origin's 17-inch EON17-SLX Gaming Laptop. High-end systems have the price tags to go with them – especially gaming laptops – so if you’re in the market for this sort of rig, the EON17-SLX’s price of $3,399 (down $500 from the price this bundle would normally cost) won’t make you... It's a tossup between Linux and Mac as to which is the red-headed stepchild of computer gaming, though things are improving on both platforms. As it pertains to the latter, Electronic Arts announced the official launch of its Origin game distribution service to Mac, giving Apple users access to many of the same features found on Origin for Windows, including cloud storage to save/continue games and social connectivity via a friends list. "One new feature will be of particular interest for gamers who play on both PC and Mac machines: dual-platform play. For select EA games (that are available on both PC and Mac), you can buy a title once on Origin, and when you log into Origin on either Mac or... Read more...
EA’s Origin is meant to be a one-stop shop for gaming: so long as you have a Windows PC, you can shop for games and play them via the Origin platform. (Think Steam.) Origin overcame early skepticism (and a coupon debacle in which it inadvertently gave away free games) and is now expanding to the Mac platform. Only a few thousand U.S. and U.K. users will be able to download Origin for Mac initially. For now, Mac support is in Alpha, and it’s incomplete. There is no store, for example, but the tab is there and Origin expects to make that live by the official launch. That’s true of certain other features, too, like Twitch. The same goes for the title catalog, which is limited at... Read more...

Battlefield 3 dropped last week, promising a strong single-player campaign, an impressive new graphics engine, and up to 64-person multiplayer mayhem on huge maps. Despite a rough few days post-launch, the game delivers much of the multiplayer goodness that it promised, with a strong emphasis on team dynamics and an experience system that rewards both focusing on a particular class and learning the capabilities of all four. In a surprising change of pace, it appears that GameStop will be returning to the PC games market with an announcement that customers can now place pre-orders for digital downloads. Seemingly following EA's lead, the brick-and-mortar retailer has begun shifting the some of its focus off of packaged goods sales and onto digital distribution. GameStop recently nabbed up the Impulse digital distribution platform, in a bid to compete with Steam and EA. The first game to receive the new treatment will be Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which launches August 23 in-store and online. Customers looking to purchase the game can even put store credit from trade-ins towards the pre-order if they so choose. "This... Read more...
EA CEO John Riccitiello said in a quarterly earnings call yesterday that the game console cycle, that is, the 4-5 year long space between console development and launches, is over. Between this and recent statements that physical storefronts will be disappearing in the near future, it sounds like EA has it all figured out. During the conference call, which was spearheaded by reports of a good quarter thanks to Portal 2 and pre-orders for the coming releases of Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic, Riccitiello mentioned that the video game industry has been "radically changed." "Gone forever is the 4- to 5-year console cadence that gave developers ample time to invest and retool for the... Read more...
Video games publisher Electronic Arts says that the end is coming for brick-and-mortar video games stores. Speaking to Eurogamer in an interview yesterday, EA Sports Vice President Andrew Wilson made clear his thoughts on the future of game purchases. "There will come a day where I think that people will stop going into GAME and GameStop. And I use those purely as examples of retail," said Wilson. "It's important for retailers and us to understand what the consumer wants in the future." EA, of course, has something to gain in the possible demise of chains such as GameStop, as the company just launched a direct-download service named Origin last month. Compounded with the publisher's recent... Read more...
One of the downsides to system reviews is that it's usually impossible to evaluate system reliability or performance over an extended period of time. Since boutique builders typically assemble rigs with a focus on solid warranties or top-level components, not being able to properly grade long-term reliability is an area of product coverage that some of you might find lacking. Fortunately, we're currently in a position to investigate this sort of question with one particular product and perhaps on a higher level as well.  Here's our look back in the review and moving forward with the Origin Genesis custom gaming desktop system...... About 18 months ago, we reviewed Origin's then-new Genesis system. The Genesis we looked at was a Core i7-920 overclocked to 3.8GHz with a Koolance water cooling system,... Read more...
You know the drill by now: NVIDIA releases a new GPU, and pre-fab PC makers jump at the chance to upgrade their machines with the latest and greatest. This week, the GTX 560M was revealed for notebooks, and sure enough, it looks as if Origin PC was working in conjunction with NVIDIA. The reason? Because Origin has just made the 560M available on all of their laptops, including the beastly EON-17S. Pricing on those machines varies based on what other components you stuff in there, but trust us: the 560M isn't cheap. But what else would you expect from an option that just became available within the past 24 hours? That's the price of living on the bleeding edge, but at least the option is there... Read more...
Gaming desktops, by and large, are large. Ahem, or should we say, "towering?" Either way, the bulk of hardcore gaming desktops on the market today ship in massive cases, with plenty of room for extra PCIe cards, hard drives, and pretty much anything else you'd want to toss in there. But small form factor systems have a place in all of this as well, as shown by companies such as Shuttle. Origin PC is a company that started with just a towering desktop option, but as business has progressed, they've seen fit to reveal an SFF box as well. This week, they're introducing the Chronos, a smaller system that touts Intel's 2nd-gen Core processors, a smaller-than-average footprint (great for studio apartments... Read more...
Origin's EON line of gaming PCs was never a slow one. In fact, it was one of the most blazing lines around, with wicked customization options and a sky-is-the-limit vibe to it. Now, there's even more wow-factor packed in. The company has just upgraded the EON17-S with a 1080p 3D panel and overclocking options that push the CPU to 4.8GHz! Yes, that's from Origin, and yes, they'll honor their own warranty even with a chip pushed to the extreme. Furthermore, the company's tossing in a built-in 3D emitter. So, let's recap: a near-5GHz CPU, 1080p 3D and a massive 17" shell. Shame the starting tag is still $1759, but you obviously get what you pay for.... Read more...
