It looks like HP is anticipating strong demand for Windows 10 laptops and convertibles powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. One of HP's first devices built around the mobile chip is the Envy x2 (model 12-e011nr), a premium 2-in-1 that is now available to order, for $999.99. It's a good thing HP did not charge a penny more, because then we'd have to pan the thousand-dollar price tag—phew! Jesting aside, the asking price is high for a Windows 10 convertible with an ARM processor inside rather than a x86 chip. The selling points are built-in 4G LTE connectivity and long battery life. With the former, users are more easily able to hop online, rather than having to hunt down a Wi-Fi... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard has issued a voluntary recall on batteries used in more than a dozen laptop models that were sold between December 2015 and December 2017. According to the recall notice, affected batteries are at risk of overheating and catching fire. So far, HP has received eight reports of battery packs getting too hot and melting or charring. Three of those incidents resulted in property damage totaling $4,500, and in one instance a user suffered a "minor injury" from a first-degree burn to the hand. Units with affected batteries were sold through Best Buy and other stores and authorized dealers across the nation. They were also sold online at places like Amazon and HP's own web store. Models... After overseeing a massive restructuring effort, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced that Meg Whitman will be stepping down as CEO effective February 1, 2018. She will be replaced by Antonio Neri, HPE's current president, who will also join the company's board of directors. Whitman will remain on the board as well, the company said. "I’m incredibly proud of all we’ve accomplished since I joined HP in 2011. Today, Hewlett Packard moves forward as four industry-leading companies that are each well positioned to win in their respective markets," Whitman said in a statement. "Now is the right time for Antonio and a new generation of leaders to take the reins of HPE. I have tremendous... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard is taking its premium PC lineup to the next level with the introduction of the new Spectre 13 and Spectre x360 13. Both notebooks feature premium materials including a CNC machine aluminum body, available 4K displays and 8th generation Intel Core processors. Starting with the Spectre 13, HP says that this is the world's thinnest touch notebook, and features a 13.3-inch display with micro-edge bezels that is covered in Gorilla Glass for added strength and durability. That display comes standard in Full HD resolution, but if you have the extra cash, we'd recommend upgrading to the 4K option. On the hardware front, buyers can choose from 8th generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors... Read more...
In what can be considered another legal setback for Oracle, a jury has ordered the firm to pay Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) $3 billion in damages for its decision to stop developing database software for HP's Itanium-based servers in 2011. Oracle plans to appeal the verdict, but for now it's on the hook for a significant sum over a contract dispute. What this all boils down to is whether or not Oracle had a legal obligation to continue supporting Itanium after Intel indicated that its end of life was near as it began focusing more on its x86 microprocessors. Oracle feels strongly that it had no such commitment, while HP successfully argued the opposite, adding that its servers would be obsolete... Read more...
