There hasn't been much love lost between NBC Universal and Apple, especially in the wake of the PR battle that recently took place when NBC announced they were not renewing their contract to have their programming available via iTunes after their current contract is up.  Whatever the true reason for that particular decision, it seems that the PR battle is continuing, this time with NBC Chief Exec Jeff Zucker claiming that Apple destroyed music pricing as we know/knew it."We know that Apple has destroyed the music business -- in terms of pricing -- and if we don’t take control, they’ll do the same thing on the video side," Zucker said at a breakfast hosted by Syracuse’s Newhouse School of... MSNBC has joined the ranks of social networking sites such as Reddit and Digg as it has acquired Newsvine.MSNBC Interactive News LLC said it acquired Newsvine Inc., a small Seattle startup that lets visitors read and comment on news stories from mainstream media outlets.MSNBC, which is jointly owned by Microsoft Corp. and NBC Universal, did not disclose financial terms of the deal late Sunday. NBC Universal is a joint venture of General Electric Co. and Vivendi SA. When NBC Universal said it would not renew its deal with iTunes, Apple upped the ante by saying it would not sell any NBC shows once the new season started, so as not to "confuse" customers.  Apple said this wouldn't happen, but iTunes is selling NBC's shows for the upcoming season. Listed at iTunes on Wednesday were episodes of Chuck and Journeyman, two shows that premiered earlier this week. The reason that Journeyman and Chuck are showing up is that both shows are produced by companies other than NBC, and Apple is under contract to offer them. Based on this, don't expect to see Heroes on iTunes.  Oh, and ... do you want to know if Nathan and... Read more...
The recent feud between Apple and NBC Universal had it all: accusations, frustrated customers, threats, and even a new download service from NBC Universal.  While it is fairly clear what customers think of the drama where do other broadcasters stand? We reported earlier that FOX is either content or playing their cards really close to their chest, but what about CBS?  They also seem content to stick around:CBS Chief Executive Officer Les Moonves said that his company would be staying out of the battle with Apple. "We like our relationship with iTunes," he said.Moonves said that iTunes wasn't a significant source of revenue for CBS, but the company looked at it as much for promotion as it did for... On Thursday, NBC announced a new service, "NBC Direct." NBC Direct will allow users to download and view many popular NBC shows -- for free. The shows will require a special player, and they will have a license that expires one week after the original airing -- note carefully, not one week after you download it, but one week after the show originally aired.Under the new NBC service, called NBC Direct, consumers will be able to download, for no fee, NBC programs like “Heroes,” “The Office” and “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on the night that they are broadcast and keep them for seven days. They would also be able to subscribe to shows, guaranteeing delivery each week. But the files,... Read more...
On August 31st, NBC Universal said it would not be renewing its contract with iTunes, after a dispute over pricing.   Later that day, Apple said it would drop NBCU content prior to the fall season - and prior to the expiration of the contract.   NBCU didn't waste any time, as today in a joint announcement NBC Universal and Amazon.com announced NBC television shows will be available on Amazon Unbox. Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and NBC Universal today announced that a wealth of quality TV content from NBC Universal is now available on Amazon Unbox (https://unbox.amazon.com), Amazon.com's digital video download service. Amazon Unbox and NBC Universal are offering customers a variety... Read more...
Yesterday we brought you a story about Apple and NBC Universal apparently having a spat over prices, and we've just uncovered a bit more information that casts a new light on the decision making process over at NBC Universal: “NBCU contends that Apple’s pricing is more about hardware than content: “It is clear that Apple’s retail pricing strategy for its iTunes service is designed to drive sales of Apple devices, at the expense of those who create the content that make these devices worth buying.”While Apple has said it will stop selling NBC shows next month, NBCU says that it not the case: ”We want consumers to know that all our returning series, including new episodes, will be available on... NBC Universal is the number one supplier of digital video that is distributed on iTunes, with 40% of the downloads, yet it was unable to come to terms with Apple - over what else, money.  Because of this, and perhaps more, it will not be renewing its distribution contract with Apple. The company’s contract to sell more than 1,500 hours of news, sports and entertainment programming on iTunes expires at the end of December. NBC was required to inform Apple by Friday if the contract would not renewed, said Amy Zelvin, spokeswoman for NBC Universal Digital. Although there has always been some degree of tension over Apple's pricing scheme, which is a one-size-fits-all model, it's also... Read more...
Perhaps it was inevitable that a big news agency would eventually get taken in by a fake blog, but who would have thought it’d be from a faux Al Sharpton?Further, who would have that the blog would have been found on Blog Groper, a site full of fake celebrity blogs that even includes the recent “Steve Jobs” blogger who made tech headlines less than a month ago. “Now, however, it looks like News Groper may have had its big break--MSNBC reporter Alex Johnson mistook one of its blogs for real, and quoted it in an article. A soundbite from News Groper's Al Sharpton blog originally appeared in Johnson's story about African American leaders' reactions to the Michael Vick dogfighting case.” At least... Read more...
It seems that general counsel for NBC/Universal is of the opinion that Net Neutrality should take a back seat to issues such as piracy: "Last week NBC/Universal general counsel Rick Cotton argued that law enforcement resources are "misaligned." Cotton says it's wrong to focus on real property theft and potentially deadly crimes when cops could be out enforcing intellectual property laws." People always say that until they get carjacked.Cotton goes on to suggest that ISPs should be required to take proactive measures against pirates using their network.  Assuming that the actions may end up being legal, it's going to be interesting to see how open WiFi locations are handled, especially in... NBC Universal and Newscorp are teaming up to offer their content on their own video website. They'll be offering full length programs, paid for by advertising, just like broadcast. They've invited other networks to join them as well. Since Viacom is already suing YouTube for a billion dollars over showing their copyrighted material, it looks like YouTube might get left with only clips of cats and people who fell down in an amusing way if they're not careful. The impetus behind the venture is to provide an authorized, copyright-protected and ad-supported alternative to YouTube, which has turned into an enormously popular online destination,...
