When we first took a look at OCZ's Vertex 2 Pro series SSD back in February, we noted that our evaluation was a product "preview" due to the fact that the product was still being finalized in many ways and wasn't yet available on the open market.  Little did we know that exact product would never see the light of day in retail.  In fact, the Vertex Limited Edition SSD that we're taking a look at here today, will only be available in a limited 5K unit batch release from OCZ. That's not to say that good things don't come in limited quantities though.  In fact, the Vertex Limited Edition SSD impresses like no drive we've seen before over a 3Gbps SATA interface. OCZ Vertex Limited... Read more...
There's an old cliche' that seems to ring true with respect to the onslaught of SSD technology we've been treated to in the market over the past year or so, "there's always another one coming."  Solid State Drive technologies are advancing so quickly, that some manufacturers don't even get a chance to let the ink dry on product labeling before their engineering teams step up with yet another offering to productize.  Such is the case with OCZ Technology, a company that is seemingly lining itself up to be a one-stop-shop for all things SSD. When we first took a look at OCZ's Vertex 2 Pro series SSD back in February, we noted that our evaluation was a product "preview" due to the fact... Read more...
What's this? Yet another SSD product from OCZ Technology? It's not like the company doesn't already have a staggeringly large selection of solid state drives of both the MLC and SLC varieties, with various controllers under the hood and even a RAID-driven, PCI Express based line-up. You wouldn't want another SSD from OCZ to choose from, with yet another Flash controller player to consider, now would you? Of course you would. The general consensus in the market right now is that both the consumer and OEM/embedded arenas can't get enough of solid state storage technology nor can it evolve quickly enough. What's interesting about NAND Flash storage is that the primary limiting factors, density and... OCZ unveiled the Z-Drive, a PCI-Express Solid State Drive (SSD) today. The new Z-Drive is an all-in-one high performance plug-and-play bootable PCI-E SSD that provides a cost-effective means for enterprise customers to take advantage of solid state drive technology. The Z-Drive is designed to significantly reduce both the maintenance and overall TCO for clients. The Z-Drive builds on OCZ's expertise in flash-based storage. This proprietary SSD employs a high-speed PCI-Express architecture in combination with a compact enterprise-grade RAID array to eliminate the SATA bottleneck. Thanks to eight PCI-E lanes and an internal four-way RAID 0 configuration, the Z-Drive is able to deliver performance... Read more...
Growing tired of solid state news yet? Nah, impossible, right? As the HDD looks increasingly aged, SSDs are stepping in at an alarming rate to replace 'em. Though, all the power saving, speed and durability in the world won't matter if prices don't stoop down to reasonable levels, and that'll only occur with more competition in the sector. Today, Toshiba America Electronic Components (TEAC) has announced that its latest generation solid state drives, based on 43nm MLC NAND-flash, are now shipping to manufacturers of more than five leading mobile PC brands. For now, the drives are only being made available to OEMs, so you'll need to buy yourself a new machine in order to acquire one. As for sizes?... Read more...
Fusion-io has been breaking down walls and pushing envelopes in the solid state drive arena for as long as we can remember, and just a month after issuing the ioXtreme PCIe SSD, the company is now developing an all new class of enterprise MLC.Specifically, the oufit has developed a new engineering technique for managing multi-level cell (MLC) flash technology, which combines the enterprise reliability of single-level cell (SLC) technology with the economical consumer-grade MLC flash. Fusion-io products utilizing this technology, called single mode level cell (SMLC), offer a cost-effective MLC-based solid-state solution with the endurance and performance of SLC at a much lower cost per gigabyte....
