ASUS is a relative newcomer to the smartphone market in the US, but they have had worldwide presence for quite some time. Overseas customers have long enjoyed access to devices such as a giant 7-inch smartphone that makes American phablets look tiny by comparison. Even though most consumers are no longer put off by holding up 5 - 6 inch phones to their head, 7 inches is stretching it. So, when it came time to make inroads here in the states, ASUS went a slightly different route with the Padfone X Mini. As was the case with the Padfone X, released earlier this year, the Mini is a 2-in-1 device: it's a smartphone and tablet. The two don't work separately, however.... Read more...
With a GoPro IPO on the horizon, it's safe to say that what started as something that extreme sports fanatics took advantage of is about to becoming a mainstream hit. In a lot of ways, the tiny action camera already is. Now, the BMW Group's Technology Office has partnered with GoPro to build the first-ever in-car integration between GoPro and an automobile. Cars equipped with BMW Apps or Mini Connected platforms will be able to configure and control a GoPro. Starting in July 2014, the integration will be functional on all model year 2012 and later BMW Group vehicles equipped with the BMW Apps or MINI Connected option, when used with a Wi-Fi-equipped GoPro camera. The two have worked hard to curb... Read more...

Zotac is one of a select few companies that have fully embraced the ultra-small form factor and home theater PC markets. Although they’re also known for producing custom, high-end graphics cards, and an array of motherboards, which include a smorgasbord or mini-ITX options, Zotac’s Zbox and Mag lines of mini PCs are quite diverse. A quick jaunt to their website reveals over 30 ultra small form factor designs that leverage technology from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, and even VIA. What’s also interesting about Zotac’s mini-PCs are their extensive feature sets. Zotac seemingly crams as many features into a small space as physically possible. If you need proof, look no further than... Read more...

Apple's Mac mini hadn't seen a substantial update for about a year, but with Intel's Sandy Bridge-based second generation Core processor family arriving in 2011, it was only a matter of time before one of those chips found favor with Apple's tiniest desktop. Apple's Mac mini hadn't seen a substantial update for about a year, but with Intel's second generation Core processor family arriving in 2011, it was only a matter of time before one of those chips found favor with Apple's tiniest desktop. The Mac mini design really hasn't changed in the year or so it took the folks in Cupertino to swap out the Core 2 Duo for Intel's new Core i line of processors. In terms of volume and dimension, it's almost exactly the same as the 2010 edition, but with a major addition--that port between the HDMI socket and those four USB 2.0 ports. It's a Thunderbolt port, a lightning-fast interconnect jointly designed with Intel. With the addition... Read more...
We know you just purchased your last laptop, but already HP's giving you a reason to ponder an upgrade. The company's launching a major stash of new gear today, and we'll start with the new consumer machines. As part of a major notebook expansion, the gamer-centric HP Envy 14 is seeing an update. While the exterior is basically the same, the machine now features second-generation Intel Core processors, USB 3.0 ports and a new HP imagepad that relies on image sensor technology for "Advanced Gesture Support." You'll also find an etched alloy case, a 14.5" LCD, Beats Audio, and HP's SimplePass for secure logins. The refreshed Envy 14 is expected to go on sale on June 14th, with a starting price... Another day, another netbook. This time, it's a new one from Dell, and it's another in the Inspiron Mini 10 lineup. Dell's Mini 10 range has been around for nearly as long as 10" netbooks have been around, and the new Mini 1018 borrows styling cues from the curvy Inspiron R notebook line and includes mostly just the basics at a lower price point. You won't find a Broadcom media accelerator or an SSD here, but you also won't find a $500+ price tag. The Mini 1018 is a lower-end netbook meant for those who just need to handle the basics, offering a single-core Atom N455 processor, DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive, Wireless N Wi-Fi, a black coating and a 10.1" display with a 1024x600 resolution. Who would have guessed years ago that an entire sector of laptops could be created just for education, and then regular consumers would go out and buy them for themselves? That's practically what happened with the OLPC XO and netbook craze, and amazingly, it's all still going strong. HP has been a huge player in the netbook market, and today they're introducing yet another small notebook. This one's an education-focused Mini netbook designed to help schools around the world acquire affordable, reliable computing technology, and it goes by the name Mini 100e. The e, of course, stands for education. And much like Intel's Classmate PC, this unit has lots of cute curves and is designed to withstand... Read more...
If it's not one thing, it's another. In other words, if it's not a touch-enabled slate PC, it's a touch-enabled notebook. HP is getting in on the action at CES, today introducing a new line of TouchSmart notebook and netbook machines. The highlight of the revised lineup is the company's first-ever touch Mini PC, but that's far from all that the firm rolled out. Touch was clearly in style with the TouchSmart tm2 and Mini 5102, both of which are further detailed below. As for pricing, the 5102 should be in the United States this month for $399 (Starting MSRP), while the TouchSmart tm2 will be available before the month's end in a variety of colors for $949 and up. The HP TouchSmart tm2 is a powerful,... Read more...
HP's Mini range of netbooks have been well respected in the industry, and while they were never as instrumental as Asus in the explosion of the netbook as a whole, they've really managed to nail their niche. From the start, the HP Mini was one of the most fashionable netbook lines out there, boasting subtle curves, a uniform keyboard, gorgeous styling cues and a larger-than-average trackpad. By and large, the Mini lineup hasn't changed too much since its introduction, but that has mainly been the case because Windows XP was pretty much the only operating system available for it (Linux alternatives notwithstanding). Couple that with the limited Atom CPU lineup and the struggle to keep costs down,... Read more...

If you're looking for a new netbook, and you don't mind paying for a mobile broadband plan to go with it (so long as it's cheaper up-front), both AT&T and Verizon have plenty of options for you to pick through. Up until now, however, Sprint has been notably absent from that group, but thanks to a new partnership with Dell, even Sprint shelves will soon house computers. The tried-and-true Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is coming to Sprint's network, where it will sell with an integrated CDMA/EVDO module that'll get you online pretty much anywhere in America. Unfortunately, Sprint missed its opportunity to roll this out with 4G WiMAX support, which would've easily made it the most interesting subsidized... Read more...

There's nothing better than a good rumor, especially when it comes to new Apple gear.  It seems like the hype machines spool up a little earlier for the Apple crowd.  And why not, Apple certainly has been executing as of late.  Of course, we always love a good OS marketing war (it took you long enough, MS...) but that's a whole different can of worms we won't open here. Still, we can't help but chuckle, since like many of you who are "in the know", we also see the striking similarities between Macs and PCs these days.  After all, the hardware inside is now what we all can agree are "PC" components. Over the weekend, rumors surfaced that a possible October 14th Apple release would... Read more...
