If you’re looking for a weekend project, having a go at the latest Ubuntu (beta) release would be a fun one. Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, a long-term support (LTS) release, is now in beta and available for download from Canonical. Being an LTS release, there aren’t a lot of earth-shattering changes, but Canonical has definitely tweaked things a bit. New features include making Rhythmbox (which includes access to the Ubuntu One Music Store) the default music player, an update to LibreOffice (v.3.5), some minor interface improvements, increased support for ClickPad devices (where a physical button is built into a trackpad), and more. Overall, version 12.04 looks a lot like version... Read more...
You might not realize this, but Yahoo quietly launched a new way to provide search results last night. This new paradigm is called Yahoo! Glue, is currently in beta in the U.S., and is based on a similar program Yahoo! has already been experimenting with in India for the last few months. If you perform a search on Yahoo! you are not going to see anything different--Yahoo! Glue currently resides on its own standalone site at glue.yahoo.com, and you'll need to perform searches specifically from Yahoo! Glue if you want to see the new search results selections and layout. The focus of Yahoo! Glue is to offer an alternative to what has traditionally been a text-heavy-based model and to make providing... Read more...
Pardon the headline mashup, but we're combing two automotive stories into one post here. While the two stories might not necessarily be directly related, they both shed light on different views of what the future of automobiles might look like. The first story is about the juicy tidbits General Motors (GM) has just revealed about the production-version of the Chevrolet Volt, and the second story is about a bloke who recently completed a successful test run of a self-guided, robotic Toyota Prius he built "in his spare time."        Credit: General MotorsChevrolet VoltAs part of GM's one-hundredth anniversary celebration today, the company finally unveiled the production version... If this was in the U.S., you can bet Jack Thompson would be all over it.  Since it's Thailand, not exactly a media-friendly country, we may never hear about it again, except perhaps in shareholder reports. Police claim that the youth showed no sign of mental instability while he was being questioned. He told police that he hadn't intended to kill the 54 year old driver. "He said he wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game," said the police chief. A government official with Thailand's Cultural Surveillance Center told Reuters: "This time-bomb has already exploded and the situation could get worse... Today it is a cab driver, but tomorrow it could... Read more...
It was about a month ago that NVIDIA released drivers that included PhysX support, leading to multiple allegations of cheating.  Why?  Well, quite naturally the CPU physics test (3DMark Vantage) shows much higher results with PhysX in the mix, as the CPU load moves greatly to the PPU.According to a forum post, Futuremark hasn't been asleep, and has decided any such results will be deemed invalid and removed. I've changed (sic) a couple of e-mails between Futuremark CEO Tero Sarkkinen who quickly commented current confusing situation in ORB and Hall of Fame. NVIDIA's GPU PhysX was launched in the middle of summer and most of FM's staff are on holidays (Most people are here in Finland).... Read more...
When checking out the specs on the Voodoo Envy 133 earlier, we were pretty annoyed by the Flash intro to the revamped VoodooPC site. That's precisely the reason for a feature such as this. Search for a site, and - if the site has a Skip Intro link on it - results will have a "Skip intro," which enables users to skip the Flash intro, directly from the search results.Of course, this doesn't help on the VoodooPC site, as there's no "Skip Intro" option on their site. Possibly because the intro is pretty short, but still irritating. This is precisely the type of small, some-would-think inconsequential feature which is just the type of thing that draws people to one search engine over another. ... The Megan Meier MySpace case, in which Megan committed suicide after a MySpace hoax committed by no less than an adult, has caused a Missouri community to craft a law to prevent something from this from happening again, at least without some punishment for the perpetrators. The goal of the ordinance, said Assistant City Attorney John Young, is to punish people who use threatening or obscene language or images through electronic communication to inflict emotional distress on another person. For a time, AOL was intent on creating a huge database containing what types of things people usually search for. When the operation was revealed, AOL apologized, removed the file, but not in time. 21 Million search queries is what the file contains, and with a number like that, you know you're going to see a great variety in what people like to search for. Love, revenge, material things, all of the usual stuff is there, mixed with some other things you may or may not expect. "That database does not include names or user identities. Instead, it lists only a unique ID number for each user. What that means is that it's possible to view the... Read more...
