Yesterday, Virgin Mobile UK let it slip that Apple would be announcing new, limited edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhones today. And right on cue, the folks in Cupertino this morning revealed (PRODUCT)RED versions of both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Unlike previous releases of Apple's (PRODUCT)RED iPhones, the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus ditch the white front in favor of black. After all the complaining that Apple endured with last year's (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 release, it's good to see that the company actually listened to its critics. We must admit, it does look farbetter with the red/black color scheme. The only odd design choice is the silver Apple logo on the back -- perhaps black would... Read more...
Apple generally sees a significant uptick in iPhone sales after releasing a brand new model, which is usually reflected in quarterly earnings reports. We will know in time if that is the case with its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models. In the meantime, wireless carriers in the United States and Canada have noted a slowdown in upgrades to the iPhone 8 series, with one carrier even deeming demand as being "anemic." Joe Natale, chief executive officer of Rogers Communication, the largest wireless carrier in Canada, is the one who said that about the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. However, Natale also noted that anticipation for Apple's iPhone X with an all-screen organic light emitting diode (OLED)... Read more...
Last month, Apple introduced a new family of smartphones to appease the legions of iPhone users around the globe. The first products to take the stage with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which are enhanced versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that debuted last year. The real "star" of the show, however, was the iPhone X, which is an all-new model with minimal bezels, Face ID and an OLED display. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were first made available in the retail market on September 22nd, and according to industry analysts, customers haven't exactly been won over by the new phones. KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh says that surveys conducted with wireless carriers show that... Read more...
It would not be an iPhone launch without reports of manufacturing problems of one kind or another. Throughout the years, there have been complaints of yellow banding resulting from the adhesive underneath the display (iPhone 4), a purple haze when snapping photos (iPhone 5), and of course bendgate (iPhone 6)s, to name a few issues. The latest complaint applies to the recently introduced iPhone 8 Plus, and it has to do with the display busting open. As with every issue that has popped up over the years, this is not an epidemic, but an apparent defect being observed by a relatively small number of users. Those numbers can add up, however, as Apple sells a lot of iPhones. That said, some users are... Read more...
Apple fans are not going to like this, but despite all of the hype surrounding the company's custom A11 Bionic processor, Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 is faster than the iPhone 8 Plus in real-world usage, according to a series of app loading tests. The results run counter to what we have seen in previously leaked benchmarks, in which the A11 Bionic trounced the competition. In a leaked Geekbench test run, for example, the A11 Bionic-powered iPhone X posted a single-core score of 4,061 points and a multi-core score of 9,959 points, putting it well ahead of every Android phone we have tested to date, including ones powered by Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 835 SoC. However, synthetic benchmarks do not... Read more...
Back in the good old days, it used to be rather trivial to replace components on many smartphones. If your battery was dead, you just popped off the back panel and installed a fresh one. Cracked display? Loosen a few screws, lift up the display panel, remove a few flex cables and you're good to go (i.e., iPhone 4/4s). However, as smartphones have become more complex (and laden with glue and more intricate components), those easy repairs have become more difficult to complete on your own. With that in mind, Apple is telling users that they are better off not trying to fix new smartphones like the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus using components that they source. This is probably not the kind of commentary... Read more...
In the aftermath of Apple's introduction of three new iPhone models early last week, we got our first taste of Apple’s A11 Bionic processor domination via a leaked Geekbench score. The results showed a device with six cores and a "mere" 3GB of RAM absolutely killing it with single- and multi-core scores of 4061 and 9959 respectively. Now that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are no longer a secret, benchmark scores for all three are beginning to make their way to Geekbench. These new results confirm what we all witnessed last week, and prove that all three devices pack considerable more processing muscle than what is available from the current Qualcomm Snapdragon 835-powered Android competition.... With all the hoopla surrounding the iPhone X yesterday, it's easy to forget that Apple also announced two additional smartphones: the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. While the iPhone X has a starting price that is higher than any iPhone before it -- $999 -- the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are priced more in "normal" flagship territory, starting at $699 and $799 respectively.Of course, there are some trade-offs, but not enough to keep these smartphones from being out of contention if you're already invested the Apple ecosystem. For starters, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus use the same A11 Bionic processor that powers the iPhone X (along with its Apple-designed, tri-core GPU). As you can see from our... Read more...
After months of anticipation, the moment has finally arrived for Apple fans around the globe. The iPhone X (pronounces iPhone Ten) has just been announced, and for better or worse, it's just as we expected. If you've been following HotHardware at all over the past few months (and especially during the past week), then you already know much about the flagship smartphone that was supposed to remain a closely guarded secret until today. For starters, the new iPhone X features a 5.8-inch OLED display called Super Retina Display, with a resolution of 2136x1125 (458ppi), which is a nice upgrade from the LCD panels used on all iPhones to date. This dwarfs the 4.7-inch display on the iPhone 7 and... Read more...
Apple can’t be happy about how leaky its supply chain and its own internal operations are right now. Thanks to supplier leaks and slow drips from its own HQ, nearly every aspect of its next generation iPhones has been revealed. The latest pieces of the puzzle that has been confirmed by the iOS 11 Gold Master (GM) leak are the names of the three smartphones that will be announced on Tuesday: iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (confirming previous rumors). As you might expect, iPhone X is what we have all been referring to as the iPhone 8 for the past year. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are what have been previously referred to as the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. This bit of name sleuthing... Read more...
