One thing is for sure: when the Olympics come to town, so do lots of citywide improvements. Cities that are chosen to host the world's games are also majorly responsible for beefing up infrastructure to handle the influx of tourists, and that extends well beyond hotels and eateries. Things like Wi-Fi also matter these days, and it's vital to stay connected when in throngs of people. Due to that, London's famed Underground service will be equipped with Wi-Fi prior to the 2012 Games. London actually doesn't have too many Wi-Fi hotspots (at least for those without a BT account), but that should be changing in the run-up to the Games. A trial has already been completed, and by the time the events... Read more...
Even in the mobile space, sharing multi-media and content is becoming a trend that simply cannot be ignored. More and more users are expecting to video chat, watch streaming TV and having Netflix at their fingertips, wherever there is a 3G or 4G data connection. Novatel Wireless, which is a company best known for their mobile hotspot products, understands the demands, and their MiFi DLNA server has just received certification for sharing of digital media across a variety of platforms. That means that the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) has approved the MiFi 2372 mobile hotspot for use in streaming media, with the MiFi DLNA Server residing on the device itself. It runs, of course, the MiFi... Read more...

Not only is 1Gbps heading for your Wi-Fi network by next year, it will be instantly über popular. The new 802.11ac 1G Wi-Fi standard hasn't even been ratified by the IEEE yet and In-Stat predicts that by 2015, consumers will have bought nearly 1 billion devices that use it.  1G Wi-Fi, which will use radio spectrum in a range below 6GHz, will be embedded in mobile phones, e-readers and automotive infotainment systems, the study reports. It further predicts: Mobile devices with embedded Wi-Fi will make up most of the market. In 2015, shipments of mobile phones with embedded Wi-Fi are projected to approach 800 million. By 2015, In-Stat projects that 100% of mobile hotspot shipments... Read more...
As the Verizon iPhone launch is nearing, AT&T is getting aggressive. They have just announced they are increasing their tethering plans from 2GB to 4GB, and announced that their first hotpost enabled phone will be the $99 HTC Inspire 4G, launching Feb. 13. The Inspire 4G will carry AT&T's new Mobile Hotspot application. Just as with tethering, it will have access to 4GB of data, which is double what Verizon's hotspot service has. Just as with the current plan, a customer has to have the $25 AT&T DataPro plan and add on an extra $20 for tethering (or hotspot), bringing the total to $45 a month. Unlimited data for a tethering or hotspot plan would be asking too much, so we'll take the... Read more...
Ever heard of a Mobile HotSpot? Chances are you'll be familiar with the MiFi if so, which has sparked a new revolution of devices. Novatel Wireless is the company that created the MiFi, and now they're upset that a couple of other companies have come out with products that are just too similar. These days, companies are suing the pants off of one another, and with technology advancing so quickly, it's no surprise that some companies are borrowing ideas rather than creating their own. Novatel has filed suit again Franklin Wireless and ZTE for infringing on five Novatel Wireless' patents related to key architecture and functionality of the MiFi family of Intelligent Mobile Hotspots. The suit was... Read more...
If there's one place you'd expect to find a Wi-Fi hotspot, it's probably within the White House. And beyond, you'd probably expect those same hotspots to be found in federal office buildings where all sorts of very important work occurs. But clearly not every building occupied by government employees is equipped with Wi-Fi. U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) and Mark R. Warner (D-VA) are evidently upset with having to rely on overworked 3G networks too often when doing their jobs, as they have just introduced a new bill that would require federal buildings to install small wireless base stations to free up commercial network capacity. The goal of the bill is twofold: it would increase wireless... Read more...
Slowly but surely, Clearwire is becoming more and more of a household name. It wasn't long ago that only the hardcore wireless followers knew what Clearwire was, but now that this particular device is on store shelves, we suspect a lot of Apple users will be peering over just to see what the buzz is all about. The new iSpot is an interested, if not limited, device. It's the first 4G HotSpot that is actually only suitable for use with iPad, iPod touch and iPhone. That's right. Just those 3 devices are allowed to be used on the iSpot. There's a MAC address check that can tell what kind of device is attempting to connect over Wi-Fi, and unless it's one of those, the device simply will share its... Read more...
