About a month ago, we had the privilege of reviewing HIS' Radeon X1950 Pro, a mainstream oriented graphics card that performed well, but we felt ultimately came up short against the similarly priced GeForce 7950 GT.  The model we received was outfitted with an oversized cooler dubbed the IceQ3 Turbo, came overclocked by default, and supported CrossFire natively using internal ribbon cables, much like SLI with NVIDIA's cards. Although we found much to praise regarding the performance of the X1950 Pro, we found that the lack of availability of HIS products in the reseller market, combined with the possibility of DirectX 10 becoming much more important... Traian Basescu, President of Romania, during a joint news conference with Microsoft's Bill Gates told press members that he thought piracy had done quite a deal of good for the nation's developing IT industry over the last decade. This comes as no surprise to Romanian President Traian Basescu. It is estimated that 70% of the software used in Romania is pirated -- and President Basecu is proud of it. In a recent joint news conference with Microsoft chairman and founder Bill Gates, Basecu had this to say about piracy; "Piracy helped the young generation discover computers. It set off the development of the IT industry in Romania."... Read more...
Not an iPod kind of person? Samsung is doing its best to give you an alternative which it seems to think can topple the Apple Nano from its MP3-playing throne. Meet the Samsung YP-T9 MP3 Player. The nano is dead; long live the nano. The Samsung YP-T9 is everything the iconic Apple MP3 player is, plus much, much more. In fact, we would go so far as to say that unless you are married to a library full of music from iTunes, there is no reason to consider a nano if the T9 is any indication of where Windows Media Player compatible devices are headed. If you think the Samsung YP-T9 MP3 player may be for you, you can check out the rest of the review over at Digital Trends.... Read more...
What would a World Economic Forum in Switzerland be without a discussion of Google paying video uploaders for videos of people doing interesting, humorous, or Darwin-tempting things? Smoke belching factories are so twentieth century. ... analyst Josh Bernoff suspects that YouTube could launch a channel filled with advertiser-friendly videos that have been screened by both audio-fingerprinting technology and Google employees for objectionable or copyrighted content. Advertising revenue could then be shared between Google and the producers whose videos generate significant attention on the channel. "This might be filled with content that is safe... Read more...
Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström are fascinating entrepreneurs. First they built the Kazaa file sharing empire, then built Skype VoIP into a business eBay was willing to pay 2.6 billion dollars for. Now they've decided to turn their attention to streaming TV over the internet. Is their "Joost" going to destroy the television, or perfect it? Can they wrestle the broadcast beast onto the Net? Friis and Zennström are players now, big names with a fearsome track record. Even more amazing (or scary, if you're a TV insider), they have zero stake in the traditional media pillars. They don't own shows, channels, or networks. They don't... Read more...
Hello Everyone!  We're wanted let you all know that we've just posted a new article where we evaluate the features and performance of HIS' Radeon X1950 XT IceQ3 Turbo.  Here's a snip from the piece: "Today, we will be checking out HIS' take on the Radeon X1950 XT, the HIS X1950XT IceQ3 Turbo. As the name implies, the HIS X1950 XT uses the company's IceQ3 cooling apparatus which performs better than the "stock" model and is much quieter to boot. The Turbo in the name also means that the card is guaranteed to overclock to a certain speed, in this case a guaranteed core overclock to the stock XTX speed of 650MHz." Read The Rest Right Here!... A few weeks ago, we looked at the HIS Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo, a mainstream graphics card set to do battle with the GeForce 7900GS in the $200 price segment. Based on the RV570 GPU, the X1950 Pro brought a host of features to the table including native CrossFire. While X1950 Pro is a good performer for a great price, some of us were left wishing for more. For a short while, those of us willing to spend an additional $50-$100 for a bit more power than the X1950 Pro could offer had to turn to NVIDIA. That is, until the Radeon X1950 XT was released. Today, we will be checking out HIS' take on the Radeon X1950 XT, the HIS X1950XT IceQ3 Turbo. As the name implies, the HIS X1950 XT uses the... Read more...
Microsoft has decided to go viral with their marketing approach for their Zune portable media player, and the results are ... interesting. Nothing says entertainment like a bag of eyeballs screaming at an ambulatory penis through an empty eyesocket while holding back a fart. The guys at Microsoft have really lost it with this advertisement for the Microsoft Zune. It's the perfect piece of video for early New Year's Day. I feel exactly like a bag of eyeballs right now. Happy New Year!... Read more...
Hello Everyone. We're just writing to let you all know that we've posted a new article where we evaluate the features and performance of HIS' Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo. Here's a snip from the piece: "Today, we will be looking at HIS' take on ATI's mid-range beast, the Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo. This card comes with higher core and memory speeds than the original specs call for, and it sports a large heatsink/fan designed by Arctic Cooling." Read The Rest Right Here.... Read more...
ATI made quite a splash a few weeks ago, with the introduction of the Radeon X1950 Pro. The RV570 GPU at the heart of the X1950 card is manufactured on TSMC's 80nm node. It's equipped with 36 pixel shader processors, 8 vertex shader units and 12 texture units. ATI's reference design calls for a 575MHz GPU clock and with 1.38GHz memory, but the card we'll be featuring here today is clocked quite a bit higher than this. The most interesting feature of the Radeon X1950 Pro, however, is Native CrossFire support. ATI has done away with the "Master" and "Slave" cards, and has incorporated the discreet compositing engine previously found on their CrossFire... Read more...
Not long ago, when we reviewed MSI's GeForce 7600 GT, the closest ATI-based competitor available was the Radeon X1600 Pro.  It was far from an apples-to-apples comparison from a technical standpoint, however.  While both models sported the same number of Pixel and Vertex Shaders and had similar prices, the X1600 Pro's performance was hampered by fewer ROPs and DDR2 memory which was clocked significantly lower that the GeForce 7600GT's GDDR3 complement. With the recent release of the Radeon X1650 Pro, however, ATI now offers a card that matches up better to the GeForce 7600 GT, with faster GDDR3 memory and a higher GPU clock speed. The question remains,... We're in a tech boom. Ask for a raise. And read CNN/Money's article about the reasons it's not going to be just a flash in the pan this time: The tech boom now underway is profoundly different from any that has come before. It is broader and probably longer-lasting in its impact on tech companies, and more transformative macroeconomically. There are two reasons. First, everybody wants technology. And second, technology has become radically easier to create. With the exception of a tiny number of places like North Korea - sadly left behind from most trends in modern life - every country, region, city, state or province to some degree... Read more...
With HD DVD and Blu-ray fighting much like VHS and Betamax in the 1980's, Sony is trying to win a previously lost war by releasing Blu-ray titles starting today with the release of Click, the highly popular Adam Sandler movie in released theaters earlier this year. "Sony has announced that Click, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Black Hawk Down will be the first Sony films released on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Although Blu-ray discs have been available on the market for several months now, these are 50GB dual-layer discs as opposed to the current discs being only 25GB. Pricing for the Sony films has not been publicly released." With all this fuss over which standard will... Read more...

As power users, we'd all love to own one, or perhaps even two, of today's latest and greatest graphics cards. But wanting to own the best and having the means to do so are two totally different things.  Lucky for us, there are usually a multitude of products that fall in just behind the top-of-the-line that tend to offer similar features and only marginally lower performance for a more palatable price. The product we'll be looking at today, the HIS Radeon X1900 XT IceQ3, falls into this category. As its name implies, the HIS Radeon X1900 XT IceQ3 is powered by ATI's X1900 XT GPU. But unlike an ATI built card, HIS' model sports a custom cooling apparatus that not only... Read more...
For a time it seemed like AGP was long gone, but we're still seeing more cards put out in the aging format. HIS has produced an AGP version of ATI's X1600, and while it's certainly not top of the line, it's still a decent upgrade if your going from say, a GeForce FX5200 or something of that caliber. "With VGA manufacturers releasing only PCI Express-based video cards, owners of AGP-based PCs were simply forgotten. Even though you can find quite easily AGP VGAs on the market, AGP users cannot find the latest releases for the AGP platform. For those who have an AGP-based motherboard, HIS is an oasis in the middle of the desert: they have just released an AGP-based Radeon X1600... Read more...
The second part of the microprocessor history article has been posted at BTX Form Factor Info. Not very in depth, so it's pretty easy to understand, but covers many areas of processor evolution. There have been many players in the microprocessor story, but the two companies that have had the most impact are also the two that dominate the market; Intel and AMD. Along the way, other big companies like IBM and Motorola made major contributions but have fallen by the wayside in the marketplace for personal computers.  ... Read more...

Digitimes is reporting that "sources" claim Apple will be introducing a new notebook utilizing Intel Robson Cache Technology.  Basically, the system uses NAND flash memory for booting and running most commonly run programs.  Along with major improvements in boot times, battery life should be improved significantly as power consumption is reduced as NAND has no moving parts. "According to industry observers, there are three possible ways Apple can deploy Robson technology in its notebook. The most convenient way would be to equip the device with a NAND flash disk on module (DOM) that would plug into an ATA slot. Another method... Read more...
