Well isn't this a blast from the past? Intel just issued a new Product Change Notification (PCN) document in which it has informed customers that it is reviving the Pentium G3420 processor, and is now taking new orders for the chip. This announcement left us scratching our heads, as we initially couldn't think of any reason why Intel would want to bring a chip that was first introduced in Q3 2013 and discontinued two years later back from the dead. Attempts to mitigate CPU flaws affecting practically every processor released in the past two decades has not been easy. There is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution to this mess, and some of early attempts to patch CPUs against Spectre and Meltdown only caused more problems, like random reboots. Well, good news if you an own an older processor—Intel has released another batch of stable microcode updates, this time for Haswell and Broadwell CPUs. The PC industry is still trying to come to grips with the fallout from the revelation of the Meltdown and Spectre chip vulnerabilities. Meltdown only affects Intel processors, while Spectre -- the more serious exploit -- affects processors from Intel, AMD, and ARM. Hardware OEMs and OS manufactures have banded together to release patches to help mitigate the effects of any attacks based on Meltdown or Spectre, although some of those patches have been disastrous. For its part, Microsoft is addressing some of the performance ramifications for installing patches to mitigate the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. There is a reported flaw present in processors based on Intel's Haswell microarchitecture that could allow attackers to effectively sidestep security roadblocks and install malware onto systems, security researchers warn. The method works on most operating systems, including Windows 10, and unless a fix is issued it could lead to more prominent and potent malware attacks. Buried in the details of Microsoft's technical preview for Windows 10 (look for our own discussion in short order), is a bit of a footnote concerning the operating system's requirements. I say footnote because this news -- that Windows 10 will have exactly the same requirements as Windows 8.1, which had the same requirements as Windows 8, which stuck to Windows 7, which was the same as Windows Vista -- is something we take for granted these days. Today, Intel is pushing the Xeon E5 family forward -- except in this case, the new Xeon E5 v3 chips are leaping to higher core counts, the more advanced Haswell-EP architecture, and DDR4. The result? Intel's attempt to flip the script on integrated graphics began when the chip maker introduced its Iris (HD Graphics 5100) and Iris Pro (HD Graphics 5200) GPUs infused on certain 4th Generation Core (read: Haswell) processors. We've seen some promising results out of these parts, and with a major driver update now available, Intel says you can expect "stunning performance improvements." Here's hoping you didn't burn through all of your upgrade cash last month, as Gigabyte has a new series of motherboards that any Intel-centric gamer is going to want. The company's new X99 Series Mobos support Intel's latest Core i7 Extreme Edition (LGA 2011-v3 socket) processors as well as DDR4 memory. We have been eagerly anticipating the release of processors based on Intel’s Haswell-E microarchitecture for quite some time. After about three years of incremental performance improvements at the ultra-high end, as Sandy Bridge-E was eventually replaced by similarly clocked Ivy Bridge-E based processors, the rumored specs of Haswell-E were enticing. For the past few years, as Intel has struggled to gain market share for its Android-x86 project, it's been hampered by software compatibility issues and associated performance degradation. Now, some of that burden is being lifted off the company's products -- the popular and widespread Unity 3D engine has announced that upcoming versions will include native x86 support. Intel's latest processor design and manufacturing effort marks a first for the semiconductor industry. No other semiconductor manufacturer in the world is building chips at the level of Intel's 14nm (nanometer) process node; even large memory manufacturers like Toshiba and Samsung are just now hitting 19nm. We know that many manufacturers are refreshing their chromebooks soon as Intel is pushing its Bay Trail-M SoC and Intel Core i3 (Haswell) chips, and you can count Acer among those companies. Acer announced that it will have two new SKUs in its chromebook stable, both of which will run on Intel Core i3-4005U (1.7GHz) chips. It’s intriguing that a new spate of chromebooks are getting actual Core series chips--Acer won’t be the only one--but it begs a couple of questions. AMD has had a tough time competing with Intel on the desktop lately, but when it comes to mobile technology, in the notebook arena, performance, value and power efficiency are measured against a very different yardstick.  That's not to say that CPU throughput and IPC isn't important in a notebook, not by a long shot, but multimedia performance in these highly integrated designs can matter much more than desktop designs where discrete graphics engines are easily accommodated. Last year, Intel launched two new processor cores -- the Core i7-4770K, based on the Haswell core, and the Ivy Bridge-based Core i7-4960X. Both chips were incremental updates over their predecessors; Haswell may have delivered impressive gains in mobile, but it failed to impress on the desktop where it was only slightly faster than the chip it replaced. Enthusiasts weren't terribly excited about either core, but Intel is hoping its new Devil's Canyon CPU, which launches today, will change that.
