In a blow to gamers who like scoring brand-new game titles at better prices than the norm, Best Buy has decided to cancel its popular Gamers Club program. To many, Best Buy may not have seemed like the de facto place to pick up the hottest new console or PC game, but the company's Gamers Club made sticking with the company a no-brainer, or at least it used to. With the simple $30 annual membership, gamers could save 20% off of any new game, which means that the card would be quickly paid off after only a few purchases. Beyond that, the card enabled a 10% trade-in bonus, 10% off pre-owned games, double My Best Buy points, some special one-time use coupons, and "exclusive offers". It's not clear... Read more...
The Guinness World Records 2015 Gamer’s Edition was released on November 6 for gamers who might be curious as to the longest gaming session, which franchise has earned the most in gross sales, or just basic facts and figures related to gaming. One particular topic that tends to generate discussion is what game franchise is the best. For Guinness, Activision’s first-person shooter franchise, Call of Duty, beat out other franchises, such as Grand Theft Auto and Mario Bros, to be named the best franchise ever. “More than 5,000 fans of the book from 140 countries across the world took to an online poll to vote for their favorite games, and the top 50 record-breaking games were featured... Crime might not pay -- but video games about crime certainly do, particularly when they're the follow-up to one of the biggest franchises in gaming. Grand Theft Auto V -- easily one of the biggest titles left for the Xbox 360 and PS3 -- went on sale today and cleared $800M in revenue in just 24 hours. That's not just a record for Grand Theft Auto, it's a record for Take Two, and possibly for the entire gaming industry. Last year, Activision touted Call of Duty Black Ops II as raking in a record $500M in revenue, but this has blown way past that. Reviews of the game are excellent, with an average Metacritic score of 98 and praise lavished on the degree of detail and visual effects squeezed out... Read more...

Last weekend gamers from all walks of life converged on Boston to strap in, lock-n-load, boot-up and get their frag on at the PAX East 2010 gamers conference.  On hand were a number of large, big name hardware OEMs and game publishers, showing their wares to the game-crazed masses and members of the press that attended the show.  From consoles to hand-helds and PC gaming, this show had just about something for everybody.  Hailing from the northeast latitude ourselves, of course we decided to trot on down to Beantown to catch the buzz and see the sights. Sensory overload would have been an understatement, and though we didn't stick around for the all-night frag fests taking place... Read more...

We do?  And we always thought it was all about winning - which usually means not dying.I can't even count the number of ways I've died. Like most gamers, I've been slaughtered by AK-47-wielding terrorists, poisoned by eldritch spiders and blown up with alien frag grenades. I've also been impaled on medieval swords, ripped limb from limb by dinosaurs and impassively stomped by 20-story-tall, walking war machines that barely noticed my existence.Yet here's the thing: It's possible that these deaths have been among my most enjoyable game experiences. This is the fascinating argument of a new paper by Niklas Ravaja, a scientist who has done pioneering research into the emotions of gamers as they...
