Hello All. Here we are, less than 4 months after the release of their excellent Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors, and Intel is ready with a new animal -- a quad-core processor dubbed the Core 2 Extreme QX6700. To say this year has been a bit of a whirl-wind adventure would be an immense understatement.  We've seen Intel move from a back-seat position versus the Athlon 64 X2 with their Pentium D architecture, to commanding virtually all of the lime-light as of late with Core 2 Duo, not to mention running away with nearly all of the performance benchmark wins. Hello Everyone. We've just finished putting NVIDIA's new $299 GeForce 7950 GT through the wringer, and have a fresh article on-line for your perusal. The card we looked at wasn't a vanilla reference card, however. Instead, XFX sent over a retail-ready GeForce 7950 GT 570M Extreme, complete with a dead-silent, passive cooler. Over the course of the last few months, the vast majority of news coming through the doors of NVIDIA has been in regards to enthusiast-class products such as the GeForce 7950 GX2 GPU and nForce 570 chipset. However, today the company is launching two new GPUs aimed squarely at the more mainstream price segments of the gaming community. GamePC has a review on-line today of Intel's current flagship Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor. As you probably expect by now, the X6800 outperformed every other processor they tested. What's more interesting than the performance results, however, was the overclocking test. GamePC used a water-cooling kit to take a retail X6800 up over 3.8GHz.  By air-cooling our early sample, we hit almost 3.6GHz in our initial look at the CPU. The folks at HardwareZone have taken Intel's current flagship Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor, and run it through a battery of benchmarks while overclocked to 3.33GHz using a 1333MHz front side bus frequency, and while overclocked to 3.6GHz.  Big gains across the board, of course.  And a hint at what Intel has in store in the months ahead. According to the quote below, it doesn't seem like things went very well... For the past few years, Intel's desktop processors have been playing second fiddle to AMD's Athlon 64 in a number of ways. Both single and dual-core variants of the Athlon 64 have been at the top of most benchmark charts essentially since their introduction, and AMD's processors have been more energy efficient as well.  Conversely, since the introduction of the Prescott core, Intel's processors have earned a somewhat notorious reputation for running hot and consuming more than their fare share of power. About three months ago, we took a look at the Pentium Extreme Edition 955, which was Intel's first Extreme Edition processor built using the company's then brand-new 65nm manufacturing process. Each of the 955XE chip's two cores hummed along at a lofty 3.46GHz, and we found its performance to be quite good when compared to Intel's previous dual-core and single-core offerings. Adrian's Rojak Pot has a review of Mushkin's new high speed, low latency DDR2 memory. The Mushkin 2G XP2-5300 Extreme Performance is able to run with timings of 3-3-3-10, using 2.3v(which is covered by warranty), and keeps cool thanks to Mushkin's unique heat spreader design. "Of course, all that overclockability is due to the increased voltage that the Mushkin XP2-5300 modules run at. Unlike regular DDR2 modules, these modules are rated to run at a minimum of 2.1V.
