The head of the VW brand in North America is Reinhard Fischer, and he has been talking about the market acceptance of electric vehicles. He says when EVs reach price parity with traditional internal combustion engines, that will be the tipping point for the EV industry. And according to Fischer, that the tipping point is closer than ever before. Fischer believes when pricing parity is reached, new consumers will come to the EV segment, not just the early adopters. He also says that once consumers overcome the early fears of the EV, it will be the better choice for most people. VW has several electric vehicles amongst the 12 brands that are part of the VW group. Brands that are part of that... Read more...
Chevrolet rolled out the refreshed 2019 Camaro a few months back that brought new options and a new front end to market. Chevy is at SEMA 2018 with a Camaro concept car not meant for the street but meant for the drag strip. The car is called the eCOPO Camaro Race Car Concept, and it is a fully electric drag racer. Chevy's eCOPO Camaro Concept can run the quarter mile in the 9-second range; the car was developed by GM and built in partnership with an electric drag racing team called Hancock and Lane Racing. The concept is based on the 2019 COPO Camaro, but the big V8 in that racing car was ditched in favor of an all-electric drivetrain. The eCOPO has an electric motor generating more than 700hp... Tesla has been going through "production hell" with the Model 3 EV as it strives to boost output to meet demand. CEO Elon Musk had promised that the automaker would hit 6,000 cars a week and has come close to that promise hitting production levels of 5,000 units per week. Tesla is now offering a much faster delivery window for all Model 3 variants including the sweet dual motor Performance edition of the car capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The new delivery estimates for the car are 1-3 months for the dual motor Performance Model 3, 2-4 months on the dual motor long range version of the car, and 1-3 months on the long-range rear-wheel version of the car. The latter is the only version... Read more...
Audi is working hard on electrification for its range of cars and SUVs. The automaker has talked up and shown off several e-tron EVs over the years, including in 2015 when it promised to deliver a production e-tron EV crossover to fight the Tesla Model X. Fast forward a few years and we have some new details on the e-tron Quattro SUV EV and its aerodynamic performance. Aerodynamics are particularly important on an EV as the more slippery the vehicle, the farther it can drive per charge. Audi has said that it is expecting the SUV to go for about 250 miles per charge. Audi claimed that it would have the best aero drag performance of an SUV back in 2015 at 0.25, which was then beat by Tesla and... Read more...
You better think twice before speeding down the 405. Ford has just unveiled its first “pursuit-rated” hybrid patrol car, and the Los Angeles Police Department may be one of the first agencies to get its hands on the vehicles. Charlie Beck, Los Angeles Police Department Chief remarked, “Our mission to create safe and healthy communities in Los Angeles is achieved through sustainable approaches in community policing, and that includes embracing new technologies. Patrol vehicles are a police officer’s office, and we expect them to not only be economically and environmentally efficient, but also an effective tool for fighting crime in major metropolitan areas.” The Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan... With the spotlight aimed primarily at Volkswagen these part few days (for all the wrong reasons), the German company is probably happy to hear that another company is grabbing headlines in the automotive space. And interestingly enough, the company drawing attention hasn’t never produced a vehicle, nor has it publicly stated that it will produce a vehicle — but all signs points towards the end game. The company we’re all talking about of course is Apple, and a new report from The Wall Street Journal today says that the Cupertino, California-based company’s electric car is labeled as a “committed project” and that it will launch in 2019. There’s no skirting around the fact that Apple has hired... Read more...
Elon Musk’s vision for fleets of all-electric vehicles seems to be going well for the most part, some litigious miscellany notwithstanding, but the cars are rather expensive. However, that’s all going to change in 2017, when Tesla releases the Model 3 that will cost just $35,000. Granted, a $35,000 car is not what you’d call cheap, but it’s far more affordable than the nearly-$70,000 Tesla Model S sedan. Tesla Model S Based on an all-new platform, the Model 3 should have a range of over 200 miles on a single charge, and of course it will make use of Tesla’s growing nationwide network of Supercharger stations. There will no doubt be plenty of leaks and rumors about... Read more...
Tesla has faced sales bans of its electric cars in multiple states, but there’s reason for optimism for the company in New Jersey. The state is considering a bill that would allow Tesla to sell its vehicles directly to consumers in the state, and it has just passed the state Assembly. It still must pass the state Senate, which is a significant hurdle to overcome, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense not to. The sales ban is the result of enforcement of an antiquated law that requires cars to be sold through certain means, and Tesla’s sales model doesn’t follow that mold. Tesla Model S Obviously, the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers is not supporting the measure,... Read more...
Tesla and it’s fervent visionary founder, Elon Musk, made a bold move this week by open sourcing its patents in hopes of jumpstarting the electric car industry. It’s a calculated move that wagers that Tesla can make the best electric cars even while allowing other companies to use its innovative technology all while taking away a chunk of the gas-powered car market. As part of its push to promote electric cars, Tesla also met with BMW this week to both promote electric cars and discuss how to better use Tesla’s charging stations. No other details of the talks were revealed, but a BMW spokesperson told Reuters that “Both companies are strongly committed to the success of... Read more...
Lumped on top of the many engineering challenges that Tesla has had to solve while bringing all-electric vehicles to market is a problem with its sales model. Tesla wants to sell its cars directly to consumers, which seems like a sensible, simple thing to do, but there are laws and regulations all over the country that prevent just that, and some states including New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland have specifically prohibited Tesla sales. Fortunately for Tesla, three FTC officials co-wrote a blog post backing the electric carmaker’s business model and explaining why it should be allowed to stand. Tesla Model S “When the automobile industry was in its infancy, auto manufacturers recruited... Read more...
The two teams of Tesla drivers that set out to complete a cross-country road rally driving electric Model S sedans and using only Tesla’s Supercharger stations to recharge have completed the trek in an impressive 76 and a half hours. It’s a Guinness World Record for the fastest cross-country journey via electric car, and they may have set another record for the lowest amount of charge time, too. The total energy consumed was 1,197.8 kWh, and each car drove 3,464.5 miles without using any gasoline or paying for the juice at the Supercharger stations. The Tesla drivers who were behind the wheel when the cars crossed the finish line Along the way, they encountered a blizzard in Colorado... Read more...
John Glenney and his daughter Jill were the first people to complete a cross-country trip in a Tesla Model S electric car, and their experience is perfect PR for Tesla, which just completed its coast-to-coast network of Supercharger stations. “The father and daughter had covered a distance of 3,400 miles through 16 states, taking in 28 Supercharger stops along the way. Grand total spent on fuel: zero dollars,” reads a blog post summarizing the Glenney’s trip. John Glenney No doubt inspired by the Glenneys, Tesla Motors is conducting a road rally across the country from L.A. to New York in a pair of Tesla S sedans to set a Guiness world record for “lowest charge time for... Tesla Motors keeps trying to change the automotive market with its sexy electric cars, but so far it hasn’t made a huge dent. The Tesla Roadster was certainly intriguing, and the more affordable Model S is still more compelling, but with a price tag upwards of $70,000, it’s not exactly affordable for the average joe. Tesla is looking to push more into the mainstream market with the Model X, a more affordable vehicle that offers a bit more utility and is designed “to blend the best of an SUV with the benefits of a minivan”. According to the L.A. Times, the car will cost somewhere in the $40,000 range and should have roughly a 200-mile range. Tesla Model X Unsurprisingly--this... Read more...
