Remember Chumby? Of course! These guys are back with a new platform and device, and while it doesn't look too different than the Chumby displays that we have seen in the past, the new Chumby 8 is both bigger and "better." This new one has an 8" LCD touch panel, complete with over 1500 free applications and a personalized stream of your favorite apps in addition to serving as a digital photo frame and music player. Ah, the Sony Dash. It was an interesting device from the start, but the main complaint we heard with it was the inability to take it anywhere. It's a widget-centric device that displays lots of useful information on the screen that you can digest at a glance. But it requires an AC power connection, so it's only as good as your tether. If it's in your bedroom, you can't use it in your den, or vice-versa. It's a great concept, but too limited by a lack of a battery. Sony has clearly realized that, and it now making things right. It's still too early to tell whether these types of information displays are going to be a hit in the mainstream, but with Sony entering with the Dash, there's at least a slight chance. Chumby Industries has been creating these types of displays, which are basically a digital photo frame but with web connectivity and access to a number of widgets. These displays are used to easily check the weather, check e-mail and browser photos, video and music. Insignia, which is Best Buy's brand of consumer electronics, has just introduced another option in this growing product segment: the 8" Infocast Internet Media Display. It may seem an odd way to write news about a product, but before we talk about the Sony Dash, we're going to talk about the Chumby. A Chumby is a bit of consumer electronics designed to run a variety of widgets that can do...well...just about anything. The entire project has been open-source from the beginning, and the touchscreen device is capable of functioning as an alarm clock, digital picture frame, streaming Internet radio, displaying RSS feeds, and any number of other options. An entire development effort has sprung up around the device; there are currently more than 1500 widgets/applications available for download. Plus, it's kinda cute. So what's that have to do with Sony? Quite a bit....
