Earlier this week we talked about the 40th birthday of the iconic Sony Walkman cassette player that everyone wanted in the '80s. Cassettes were the go-to form factor for portable music for a lot of years before the advent of the CD and odds are people have massive collections of cassette tapes hanging around. A company called It's OK has a new device called the Bluetooth 5.0 Cassette Player. The device brings the cassette player into the modern age to some extent by allowing it to work with your favorite Bluetooth headphones. Historians can argue the exact date of the compact cassette tape's birth, but as far as Philips is concerned, it was on this day in 1963 when the company first launched the format at its headquarters in Amsterdam. It's hard to believe it's been that long, but that makes the compact cassette 50 years old today. "This month, Philips, the innovator behind compact cassette technology, celebrates the cassette’s golden anniversary. An end of an era? Only if you didn't think the era was already over. The famed cassette tape has had one heck of a run, and even though the CD itself is finally dying, the cassette was seemingly still hanging around in some areas beyond consignment shops. Sony's Walkman will forever live long in consumer lore, enabling music lovers to carry around a portable stereo "back in the day." Now, Sony has finally decided that the time has come to move on, and honestly, we can only wonder what took so long. The company is still producing TCM-400, TCM-410 and TCM-450 cassette recorders, but those shipments will cease early next year.
