In case you missed the brouhaha on Monday, United Airlines' stock dropped from $12.50 to $3 per share in the matter of 15 minutes because of an Internet bot--and not just any old Internet bot--the king of all bots, the Google News crawler. The circumstances that led up the event were confusing, fingers were pointed every which way, and conspiracy theorists cried stock manipulation. VIA caused quite a stir a few months ago when the company first revealed initial details regarding their low-power Nano processor. In keeping with the trend of Intel Atom-based product announcements coming from Europe and Asia, U.K.-based Tranquil PC has announced yet more Atom-based products: The T7-HSAi and the T2-WHS-A3i--updates to Tranquil PC's fanless chassis-based Microsoft Windows Home Servers--both powered by 1.6GHz Atom 230 processors. Tranquil PC is pitching improved performance and low power consumption as the major benefits to switching its designs over to Atom processors. As servers are always-on devices and energy prices keep rising, power consumption is a legitimate concern for many users. Two European vendors have started taking orders for Intel Atom-populated motherboards. German-based, CARTFT is selling the Intel D945GCLF motherboard, populated with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 230 processor, for $114 U.S. Tranquil PC, based in the U.K., is selling the same setup for £52.90 U.K. (about $103 U.S.). Tranquil PC's site states that the motherboard is "shipping from first week of June on a first come first served basis." This coincides with Intel's planned official launch of the Atom platform at Computex Taipei (June 3 - 7). The folks over at UMPC Fever have got their hands on one of the very first-to-market, Intel Atom processor-based MIDs (Mobile Internet Device). It is the Aigo MID, which they claim is the Asian version of the Gigabyte M528 we'll be seeing shortly in the U.S.:"Apart from the interior Intel Atom processor, my first impression on aigo MID is it's size and weight! It seems that Intel's forthcoming, low-power Atom processor is popping up all over the news lately. First we got wind of Gigabyte's portable Atom device a few weeks ago--what we thought was an ultraportable named the M912 is really a MID (Mobile Internet Device) called the M528. Now we're hearing about another Atom-based device seen in the wild: the Fujitsu LifeBook U2010 UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC). Also yesterday, rumor of an Atom-powered Asus Eee PC surfaced to counter the rumor from the day before about an Atom-based competitor to the Eee PC from MSI. Two days ago we reported on Intel's alleged shortage of Atom processors. When we contacted Intel to confirm the story, an Intel spokesperson refused to comment. Perhaps we had the wrong person on the wrong day, because it would appear that today Intel is coming clean about the Atom shortage with Computerworld: "The new chip, code-named Diamondville, won't be officially released until June, but Intel Corp. has already been inundated with demands for early shipments, said company spokesman Bill Calder. Anyone jonesing to get their hands on an Intel Atom-based product, just might have to keep waiting a little longer than planned. According to electronista, Intel is meeting less than 40 percent of Atom orders. This is sure to impact the expected rollout of Atom-based products--some of which are expected as early as June. Either product ship dates will get pushed back, or far fewer of a particular product will be available at launch. The rumor mill strongly hints that Apple is one of the manufacturers integrating the Atom processor into a yet-to-be divulged handheld device. (iPhone 2.0 perhaps?) DigiTimes reports that Gigabyte Technology will release a low-cost laptop in June that uses the new Intel Atom processor. The M912 will include an 8.9-inch display that will run either Windows XP or Linux."The Gigabyte M912 is being designed in-house by the company in order to enable it to control the development schedule, specification and quality, the sources noted, highlighting that this will allow the company to remain flexible based on market feedback."The M912 should be one of the very fist devices available that uses Intel's new, low-power, 45nm Atom processor. Intel is formally announcing a brand new processor today that it hopes will drive the next generation of mobile Internet devices.  Intel’s new platform for MIDs is called Menlow. And whereas the previous generation McCaslin platform was found in ultra low-voltage notebooks, Menlow is the processor and chipset combination you’ll find in future navigation devices, Internet tablets, video players, and gaming handhelds. Please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from Intel.While we've heard a good deal about the first generation of Intel's Atom family CPUs, dubbed the 200 series, many have been wondering when or if a dual-core Atom is coming.  Rumors suggest that there are indeed coming:“...a new 300 series would also see the first dual-core Atoms with a 1.87GHz, Atom 300 processor. Panasonic is developing a tough little UMPC based on Intel's Atom technology and they're calling it the Toughbook.  The specs aren't entirely clear other than the platform itself and the fact that it should live up to its name:“Little information is available, but we have a water, dust, and shock resistant computer with 5.6” touch screen.”We're curious to see how they've pulled off water resistance in a device that is rumored to feature have several ports of various kinds, but we're not sure how many divers are going to need a UMPC anyhow.... Today, Intel has officially announced their Atom line of ultra-mobile processors, previously code named Silverthorne and Diamondville.  This new family of chips is based on an entirely new CPU architecture that was designed from the ground up, specifically to address the computing and power consumption requirements of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs).  Comprised of some 47 million transistors, Intel's new Atom processor die measures 25mm2; so small that you could fit eleven of the cores in the area of an US penny.  Built on Intel's 45nm hafnium-infused high-K process, these chips are said to have power consumption characteristics in the .6 - 2.5...
