It looks as though AMD might be readying a new Radeon Instinct accelerator, one that would finally feature an Arcturus GPU. The latest leak is essentially a continuation of a rumor we have been hearing about since 2018, that being the impending launch of the Radeon Instinct MI100 accelerator with an Arcturus GPU inside and HBM2 memory. The Radeon Instinct family of accelerators takes aim at machine intelligence and deep learning workloads in the high performance computing (HPC) segment—it's not a graphics card for gaming, nor is it a professional GPU for content creation, in other words. AMD's current Radeon Instinct product consists of the following: Radeon Instinct MI60: 7nm Vega, 4,096... Read more...
There is a bit of intrigue surrounding AMD's plans for the high performance computing (HPC) market, as it relates to its next round of GPU accelerators. Over on the consumer side, AMD is pushing is 7-nanometer Navi GPUs. In the HPC market, however, AMD might be recycling its Vega GPU architecture for its next batch of Radeon Instinct cards, due out next year. Leaks have pointed to these cards rocking Arcturus GPUs, and therein lies the intrigue. Arcturus made an appearance as back as 2018 in a Linux driver, where the codename was referenced alongside several Vega parts. At the time, it was thought Arcturus might be a successor to Navi. An AMD employee had confirmed the company would be using... Read more...
There is no disputing that AMD has made some giant strides in the enthusiast market, especially with its Zen CPU architecture, though also with its Vega GPUs. The latest incarnation of the latter is the recently announced Radeon VII with a 7nm Vega GPU inside. It's a beastly card in its own right, though NVIDIA still has the edge in overall performance with its own Turing GPU architecture. Will AMD ever close the performance gap? That is an interesting question to mull, in light of recent patent applications that AMD filed. First let's talk about the performance of the Radeon VII. The only numbers we have to evaluate at the moment are AMD's own benchmark figures. If those are a proper representation... Read more...
Is it too early to starting thinking about past Navi? Of course not, provided you're willing to take any and all early information with a few grains of salt. As you might already now, Navi is slated to arrive sometime in 2019. There are still many questions surrounding Navi, but looking even further down the road, the codename for Navi's successor might be Arcturus. Let's talk about Navi for a moment before getting to Arcturus. It remains to be seen what kind of performance Navi will bring to the table, though rumor has it the next-gen GPU architecture will be more of a mid-range product. Compared to NVIDIA's product stack, it's been speculated that Navi will offer performance similar to a GeForce... Read more...
