Although AMD said in January that it was diving in strong with Windows 8 and was not interested in making chips for Android devices, senior vice president and general manager of global business units at AMD Lisa Su told PCWorld that the company may shift some of its focus to building chips for Google’s two operating systems and is in fact working with developers on Android apps for AMD processors. "We are very committed to Windows 8; we think it's a great operating system, but we also see a market for Android and Chrome developing as well," she said. Those products built upon the company’s existing Trinity-based products but offered additional power and frequency optimizations designed to enhance overall performance and increase battery life. In addition to these optimizations, AMD also began offering a host of specialized software with their Richland APUs that’s leveraged their inherent strengths--namely, AMD Face Login, Gesture Control, Screen Mirror, and various video enhancement features like AMD Steady Video, Quick Stream, and Picture Perfect. AMD is announcing its Radeon HD 8970M today. We say "announcing" instead of launching because this chip is essentially a rebadged HD 7970. It wasn't initially clear if this would be the case -- the HD 7790, which the company launched back in March, is based on a new design has a few small feature changes that have led it to be unofficially labeled a Graphics Core Next (GCN) 1.1 part rather than GCN 1.0. The dawn of GPU computing came about in large part due to the immense gap in compute performance between traditional CPUs and programmable GPUs. Whereas CPUs excel with serial workloads, modern GPUs perform best with highly parallel operations. If you look at the slide below, it shows an array of Intel processors and AMD (and ATI) GPUs dating back to 2002, along with each part’s compute performance, measured in GFLOPS (or Gigaflops—billions of floating point operations per second). AMD announced its earnings today, with figures that generally reflected to poor state of the entire PC industry. Normally, this is where I'd delve into those figures and run the numbers. Not this time. AMD's conference call and Q&A session were interesting enough that the company's Q1 performance can be dealt with relatively quickly. The PC market was awful. AMD lost money. The company has enough cash on hand (thanks to selling its HQ in a lease-back arrangement) to make it through the second quarter. Computing solutions revenue really did take a hammering this quarter, falling to $751M (down nearly 40% year-on-year. The company didn't dwell on that fact, but  it's not a sustainable... AMD has confirmed that Battlefield 4 will be part of its upcoming "Never Settle" bundle. The game isn't supposed to drop until late 2013, which means AMD is announcing a coupon package well in advance of the actual title. This isn't the first time a manufacturer has taken this step, but it's been quite awhile -- the last major tie-in we remember this far in advance was an offer for Valve's Orange and Black Boxes that shipped back in the 2004 time frame. AMD has just announced a new family of Elite A-Series APUs for mobile applications, based on the architecture codenamed “Richland”. These new APUs build upon the success of last year’s “Trinity” architecture, by improving graphics and compute performance, enhancing power efficiency through the implementation of a new Hybrid Boost mode which leverages on-die thermal sensors, and by offering AMD-optimized applications meant to improve the user experience. AMD has yet to make an official statement on this topic, but several unofficial remarks and leaks point in the same direction.  Contrary to rumor, there won't be a new GCN 2.0 GPU out this spring to head up the Radeon HD 8000 family. This breaks with a pattern AMD has followed for nearly six years. Starting with the HD 3000 family, which debuted in November 2007, each successive generation appeared 9-13 months later. The HD 4000 series debuted in June 2008, the HD 5000 products launched in September 2009, the HD 6000's in October 2010, and the HD 7000 family in January, 2011. After struggling as of late in the market, AMD is mounting an offensive against very stiff competition, and part of that effort is the next generation of the company’s APUs. Codenamed “Richland”, we knew that these chips will be built on Piledriver CPU cores just as the last generation Trinity APUs are, and that Richland APUs will have an updated graphics core. VR-Zone published a table of leaked specs that show more details. Assuming this information is correct, there will be at least six SKUs ranging from an A4 to an A10 with a mix of dual- and quad-core chips bearing 6000-series numbering. The Gizmo is a 4 x 4-inch development board designed for use in applications as diverse as set-top boxes, industrial control systems, and casino gaming, and it features an AMD G-T40E processor (dual core, 1GHz) with Radeon HD 6250 graphics, and 1GB of DDR3 SDRAM. Although Xi3 made CES headlines for other things this week, the company has some tasty wares to show off in the form of its unique modular computers, and we got a firsthand look. There are just a handful of models in the lineup thus far, but despite their small size, these machines pack a wallop. There's a bit of quoted wisdom that's been making the rounds in tech news, recently. Up until now, I've ignored it, in the hopes that it would die out and go away. Instead, it seems to be showing up with greater frequency. It looks something like this: "Like Intel, AMD was caught flat-footed in recent years with the emergence and fast growth of mobile devices..." A team of overclockers dubbed “The Killers” broke the record for the fastest overclock of an AMD Trinity APU at the AMD Extreme OC show in Taiwan and also took out the record for AMD’s Vishera platform for good measure. Numbers from Jon Peddie Research on the current state of the graphics market point to Nvidia as the big winner of Q3 2012, against both Intel and AMD. Intel's share of desktop and notebook sales both dropped roughly 8%, while AMD took a much smaller hit in desktops (2%) and a far greater hit in notebooks, sliding a whopping 17%. For Sunnyvale, the bad news doesn't stop there. JPR reports that quarter-on-quarter sales of desktop APUs fell 30%, notebook APUs slid 4.7%, and overall PC graphics shipments were down 10.7%.
