Reading through technical documents is rarely fun, but every so often there are interesting nuggets to uncover. Such is the case with a document (PDF) on Intel's website in regards to its upcoming 10-nanometer Cannon Lake processors. According to the "Intel Architecture Instruction Set Extensions and Future Features Programming Reference," both Cannon Lake and Ice Lake will feature support Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) 512 instructions (along with a host of other instructions). AVX-512 first appeared in Intel's Xeon Phi processors.and coprocessors, and later on Intel's Xeon Scalable processors.... Read more...
ASUS has a rather expansive portfolio of mobile PCs, and the company is expanding the family today with the VivoBook Flip 14 TP401. The VivoBook Flip 14 manages to fit a generous 14-inch HD display into a 13-inch laptop frame, while delivering a 73 percent screen-to-body ratio. Given the "Flip" in its name, it's quite easy to see that this is a convertible, featuring what ASUS calls a "step-less any-position 360° metal hinge" that allows the device to operate in tablet and tablet modes (among others). The VivoBook Flip 14, which is milled from aluminum, measures 15.4mm thick and weighs in at 3.3... Read more...
Today, Intel announced something that it hopes will help in the fight against NVIDIA in the AI market. Intel's new processor is called the Nervana Neural Network Processor, and previously went by the codename "Lake Crest." Intel says that it has been working to make the Nervana processor for three years and it is now ready to reveal some details on the processor. Nervana is a purpose-built architecture for deep learning and the primary goal for the hardware team was to provide flexibility needed for deep learning primitives and to make the core hardware as efficient as possible. Razer's Blade Stealth gaming notebook is receiving a significant upgrade today, and the boost is coming courtesy of Intel's 8th generation Core processors. In this case, the 13.3-inch notebook is packing the Core i7-8550U, which features 4 physical cores capable of executing 8 threads. The Core i7-8550U has a base frequency of 1.8GHz and can Turbo Boost up to 4GHz. The Blade Stealth adds in 16GB of LPDDR4-2133MHz memory as well to help fuel your multitasking and gaming needs. Since you'll likely be spending most of your time staring at the 13.3-inch display, you'll be glad to know that the Blade... Read more...
Coffee Lake is not the only thing Intel has been brewing up. The world's largest semiconductor company announced the delivery of a 17-qubit superconducting test processor for quantum computing to QuTech, its quantum research partner based in the Netherlands. Intel fabricated the chip with a unique design to improve yield and performance, the Santa Clara chip maker said. By no means is the world of quantum computing new terrain for Intel, which has been working with QuTech for the past couple of years on research and development aimed at producing a working quantum computing system. Such a thing... Read more...
Intel launched its 8th generation Core desktop processors based on Coffee Lake architecture last week, and the hardware community quickly embrace the new Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. We already seen what MSI has to offer on the motherboard front for these Coffee Lake processors, and now the enthusiast hardware company has announced its latest small form factor machine: the Vortex G25. The Vortex G25 is available in two configurations, with the entry-level system feature a Core i5-8400 processor (six cores, six threads) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5 memory. The upgraded model comes... Read more...
Self-driving cars are inevitable when it comes to the future of transportation in the United States and abroad. Many auto manufactures from Ford to Mercedes-Benz to Tesla are racing to make fully autonomous driving technology ready for primetime on public roads by the turn of the decade (or shortly thereafter). Google helped to familiarize many in the tech industry with the idea of self-driving vehicles with its fleet of autonomous Toyota Prius and Lexus RX 450h hybrids. Now that Google's self-driving efforts have been spun into a separate entity called Waymo, parent company Alphabet is hoping... Read more...
G.SKILL has trotted out another hopped up memory kit for latest hot processor launch to go along with the memory kits that it had already revealed for the AMD Ryzen and the Intel Kaby Lake-X platforms. G.SKILL's latest is specifically designed for 8th generation Intel Core "Coffee Lake" processors and includes the Trident Z and Trident Z RGB kits for Z370 motherboards. The RAM kits are made using ultra-high performance Samsung B-die DDR4 ICs. G.SKILL's Trident Z RGB memory kit is DDR-4000MHz with timings of CL18-19-19-39 and is 32GB with a quartet of 8GB modules. The image of the charts... Read more...
We can now add EVGA to the list of companies that support Intel's 8th generation Core processors, dubbed Coffee Lake, with the help of three Z370 motherboards. Three boards is pretty standard fare for EVGA, with this launch following the theme of other recent ones. Those wanting an mATX motherboard have an option in the form of Z370 Micro, while hardcore enthusiasts have the Z370 Classified K. For everyone in between, there's the Z370 FTW. Figuring out the minute differences between motherboards can be a massive hassle, but EVGA's made things pretty simple by including a side-by-side features list... Read more...
The upheaval of the high-end desktop processor segment continues today with the official release of Intel’s latest Coffee Lake-based 8th Generation Core processors. 2017 easily been one of the most exciting years in a decade for desktop processors, thanks in no small part to AMD’s entire line-up of Ryzen products, including the monstrous Threadripper, which propelled the company back into contention at virtually every price point.Intel was at the ready with a host of ultra-high-end processors – namely the Core X series – that allow the company to lay claim to the fastest desktop processor on the... There are some interesting things to be discovered when removing the integrated heatspreader (IHS) from a processor, a delicate and dangerous (to the CPU) process known as delidding. For example, you might uncover so called 'dummy dies' as famed overclocker der8auer did when delidding a Threadripper 1950X processor. More recently, someone delidded an Intel Core i7-8700K processor and found a slightly elongated die. HKEPC posted pics of the delidded chip on the site's Facebook page. In doing so, we can see that the die area is the same width as a Kaby Lake processor, such as the Core i7-7700K (a... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard is taking its premium PC lineup to the next level with the introduction of the new Spectre 13 and Spectre x360 13. Both notebooks feature premium materials including a CNC machine aluminum body, available 4K displays and 8th generation Intel Core processors. Starting with the Spectre 13, HP says that this is the world's thinnest touch notebook, and features a 13.3-inch display with micro-edge bezels that is covered in Gorilla Glass for added strength and durability. That display comes standard in Full HD resolution, but if you have the extra cash, we'd recommend upgrading to the... Read more...
This is a sad day in Santa Clara. Intel has lost a legend in Paul Otellini, a former chief executive officer and president of the largest semiconductor company in the world, who passed away in his sleep on Monday, October 2, 2017. The lifelong Intel employee was 66 years old at the time of his passing—way too young. His death caps off an immensely sad weekend of events that includes the death of over 50 concert goers in Las Vegas, followed by the passing of rock and roll icon Tom Petty, who was also just 66 years old. "We are deeply saddened by Paul’s passing,” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said. "He... Read more...
There's been a ton of talk (and leaks) surrounding Intel's upcoming 8th-gen Core processors, dubbed "Coffee Lake". Based on what we've seen so far, Intel is striking back hard at AMD, offering more cores at the top-end of its line-up (over its own previous generation), and higher frequencies overall. We've already seen the Core i7-8700K overclock to 4.8GHz on air, which is almost a surprise given Intel's typical use of less-than-ideal thermal interface material in its chip packages. While the embargo for Intel's 8th-gen chips isn't quite up yet, one Romanian website decided to publish early, and... Read more...
