Sony’s 40th Anniversary Walkman Released With Iconic Look And Killer Features
You can now relive the glory days of mixed tapes, Sony is releasing a limited edition Walkman to celebrate the iconic device’s 40th anniversary. The NW-A100TPS Walkman will feature a 40th anniversary logo and a retro design.
The NW-A100TPS Walkman does not play cassette tapes, but it does have 16GB of onboard storage. Users can directly download their favorite songs or stream via WiFi. The device is supported by Android so users should be able to access a wide variety of music apps. A LDAC, or a premium wireless codec, provides high-resolution audio music streaming, while a DSEE HX processor allows for audio upscaling. The Walkman will also include NFC and Bluetooth support, a USB-C port, noise cancelling, and up to 25 hours of battery life.
According to a Sony representative, “Not everything was better back then, enjoy the best of both worlds with the heritage design of the Walkman whilst having cutting edge technology at your fingertips.”
Consumers will likely be attracted to the Walkman’s old-school design. The Walkman’s soft case mimics the original design of the TPS-L2 Walkman. Users will also receive two sheets of 40th anniversary stickers.
The Walkman incorporates a 3.6-inch touchscreen with an interface that can be used to play, pause or skip songs, admire album covers, and other features. When the UI is not in use, the screen resembles a moving cassette tape. The “cassette tape” will even include details about the song you are currently listening to.
The original TPS-L2 Walkman was released on July 1, 1979. Sony wanted to create an inexpensive portable cassette player that would be easy to carry. They have sold over 400 million units since the original’s release.
The Walkman is not the only portable music device to get a recent refresh. Apple recently released a new iPod Touch with a 10 Fusion chip, 4-inch retina multi-touch IPS display, and features such as AR gaming and Group FaceTime. The device starts at $199 USD for the 32GB model. It is the first iPod Touch update since 2015.
