Samsung Galaxy A9 Quad-Camera Mid-Range Phone Image And Benchmarks Leak

Samsung is scheduled to unveil its next-generation Galaxy A9 family of smartphones tomorrow, and one of the headlining features of the device will be its quad-camera setup on the back. While dual cameras have become commonplace in smartphones these days -- even in the mid-range market -- some manufacturers like Huawei and LG are creeping into triple-camera territory. Now, with Samsung bringing on quad cameras, it's all-out war in the arena of smartphone optics.

Evan Blass has spoiled a bit of Samsung's surprise ahead of the event, showing off a single image of the rear of the Galaxy A9 complete with its four cameras, which are arranged vertically in-line. From top to bottom, the cameras are labeled:

  • 8MB Ultra Wide Camera, 8MP, F2.4, 120-degree FoV
  • 10MP Telephoto Camera, 10MP, F2.4, 2x optical zoom
  • 24MP Main Camera, F1.7
  • 5MP Depth Camera, F2.2, live focus

Given that our phones have become our go-to cameras over the past decade, it's nice to see that Samsung devoted so many resources to providing a smartphone that has an entire grab-bag of dedicated lenses at its disposal in a single device.

With that being said, other rumored specs for the Galaxy A9 family include a 6.38-inch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, and a rather large 3,720 mAh battery. As to why Samsung is debuting such a camera system on a mid-range smartphone, Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh recently told CNBC, "I have changed my strategy from this year to bring technology and differentiation points starting from the mid-end. How can I deliver meaningful innovation to our millennials? That's the reason I'm trying to differentiate the mid-section."

In other Galaxy A9 news, the smartphone recently hit Geekbench, where it put up single- and multi-core scores of 1609 and 5844 respectively. The Geekbench listing also confirms the octa-core Snapdragon 660 SoC, 6GB of RAM and that the device is running Android 8.0 Oreo.
