Pokemon Go Update Brings 80 New Monsters And Evolution Items This Week

Just when you thought you were close to catching them all, Niantic announces plans to add dozens of more Pokemon characters to Pokemon Go, the mobile game that became an overnight sensation by tapping into augmented reality to allow people of all ages to go out in search of popular creatures from the Pokemon universe. If anyone was looking for an excuse to get hooked again, this could be it.

Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile are among the more than 80 new Pokemon characters that are getting added to Pokemon Go later this week. The update will introduce Pokemon that were originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver games. There will also be Pokemon with gender-specific variations added to Pokemon Go when the update arrives.

Other changes are coming to Pokemon Go as well. Niantic says its update will introduce new opportunities to evolve Pokemon. For example, some Pokemon originally discovered in the Kanto region will soon be able to evolve into Pokemon that inhabit the Johto region. Some of these will require new evolution items that can be found at Pokestops.

Pokemon characters may react differently than what players are used to when trying to catch them. Niantic didn't provide any specifics about this, but apparently they'll do more than just stand there with the occasional attack movement that can frustratingly knock precious Poke Balls right off the screen.

The update will also include new item carousels that allow players to select berries and Poke Balls directly from the encounter screen, as well as two brand new types of berries—Nanab berries and Pinap berries. A Nanab berry slows a Pokemon character's movement, while a Pinap berry doubles the amount of candy players receive if their next catch attempt is successful.

Finally, the update will introduce new avatars and an expanded wardrobe with a whole new selection of hats, shirts, pants, and other items.
