Nintendo Switch Rumored For 3DS-Style Redesign With Rugged Exterior

We reported early yesterday that Nintendo is preparing to unleash two new variants of its hugely popular Switch gaming console this summer. The original Nintendo Switch is unique in the fact that it features a hybrid design that allows it to be used as a portable console, or docked for use with a large-screen television.

One of the new variants is said to be a slightly more powerful version of the current Nintendo Switch, while the other will be an even lower-priced budget entry. Eurogamer -- which has a long track record of having an inside track on unreleased consoles -- has posted some additional information on the latter model.

According to the publication, it will be aimed at "casual gamers" and will in effect be a replacement for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo is said to be targeting the youth market with this console, and hence it will have a more ruggedized exterior that can withstand abuse that younglings will no doubt put it through. The biggest change, however, is that the device will only be usable in handheld mode, with possibly no provisions for docking with a television.

Other omissions involve the onboard rumble functionality, although it's unknown if the detachable controllers will be along for the ride. The current Nintendo Switch is priced at $299, so perhaps this new entry-level model could be priced at around $199 to be more attractive to the youth audience. 

As for the high-spec'd model, Eurogamer writes:

[The Nintendo Switch will] not be getting beefed up to the specs of either the PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X - which shouldn't come as much of a surprise. I've heard the bump will be comparable to the one received by the 3DS upon its New 3DS relaunch.

Of course, these are all just rumors at this point, but given the source, we're leaning towards them being believable.
