Now, MSI is officially announcing the Alpha 15, and is giving us all of the pertinent specs on its new 15-inch gaming monster. The Radeon RX 5500M inside the laptop has 6.4 billion transistors, 22 compute units, 1408 stream processors, a 1448MHz game clock, 1645MHz boost clock and 4.6 TFLOPs compete performance. Given that this a mainstream GPUs, it’s limited to just 4GB of GDDR6 in this mobile configuration.
The Radeon RX 5500M GPU is hooked up to a 15.6 FHD (1920x1080) 120Hz IPS display as standard equipment, while an upgraded 144Hz panel is also available. Both display panel options support Radeon FreeSync technology.
When it comes to the processor under the keyboard deck, MSI has opted for AMD’s potent Ryzen 7 3750H, which is a quad-core (octa-thread) processor with a base clock of 2.3GHz and a boost clock of 4GHz. MSI is pairing the Ryzen processor with either 8GB or 16GB of DDR4 memory along with support for both PCIe NVME M.2 SSDs and 2.5-inch HDDs/SSDs.
Other features of the 5.07-pound laptop include Killer Gaming LAN, Hi-Res audio, Dynaudio Giant Speaker system, and an optional SteelSeries keyboard with per-key RGB lighting. You'll also find MSI Cooler Boost 5 technology which is backed by a 7-heatpipe setup with dual cooling fans.
According to MSI, the Alpha 15 will ship later this month with starting at $999 for the 8GB SKU, and $1,099 for the 16GB SKU. As an added bonus, the purchase of an Alpha 15 qualifies for AMD's "Raise the Game" promotion which allows you to secure either Borderlands 3 or Ghost Recon Breakpoint for free. That particular promotion is available until December 31st 2019.
