Microsoft HoloLens Preorders Open Outside of North America, Shipments Commence Next Month
Microsoft HoloLens is expanding outside of North America, as the augmented reality headset will be available for pre-order in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France and Germany. Shipping will commence for these countries in November.
Microsoft argued that the introduction of the HoloLens in these six new countries is a distinct milestone for their product. It remarked, “Each of these moments bring us closer to a more personal way of interacting with technology. They empower us to go further together, making it possible for people to communicate, create and collaborate more easily than ever before.”
The Hololens, the world’s first and still only, self-contained holographic computer, was introduced in January 2015. By March 2016, the device was being shipped throughout the United States and Canada. Microsoft most recently announced that it will be incorporating mixed reality into the device, which was demonstrated in a fantastic Pokémon Go simulation.
Microsoft is the most excited about mixed reality with regards to the Hololens. The corporation claims that, thanks to iyts partners, there are now over eighty mixed reality apps in the Windows Store. It stated, “As a creator, there is no better feeling than empowering others to let their imagination run wild with innovation. It has been nothing short of inspiring to see what our partners have built and what individual developers have created.”
The Hololens features a Holographic Processing Unit (HPU), which is a co-processor built on a 28-nanometer manufacturing process by TSMC. The device also contains an Intel Cherry Trail SoC containing the CPU and GPU, inertial measurement unit (IMU), four "environment understanding" sensors, a depth camera, a photographic video camera, a four-microphone array, and an ambient light sensor. The device lasts two to three hours during active use on an interchangeable rechargeable battery.
