Bose has acquired Skullcandy. Let that sink in for a minute—its sounds like an odd pairing, but it's actually not a bad idea. With Bose traditionally known as grandpa's headphone brand, the Farmington-based audio giant has been reinventing itself to attract younger buyers in recent years and the acquisition of Skullcandy could give that goal a nice, big shot in the arm.

After a successful multi-year technical partnership between the two companies (which had already seen Bose lend its "Sound by Bose" tuning to select Skullcandy models), it only seems natural that this takeover would happen. By taking full ownership of the Park City, Utah brand from private equity firm Mill Road Capital, Bose secures a pipeline into lifestyle, gaming, action sports, and youth demographics where its own high-end QuietComfort lineup typically holds less sway.

For Skullcandy fans worried that this will mess with the status quo, the business will continue to operate independently in Utah within Bose’s Premium Consumer Audio umbrella. What happens now is that even sub-$100 earbuds and headphones from Skullcandy could gain access to Bose’s engineering and expertise. It is now likely that future Skullcandy releases will feature Bose-grade ANC and audio tuning (among other niceties) without sacrificing the vibrant, bass-centric personality and street-friendly price points that built Skullcandy's massive community to begin with.

Executives from both companies framed the merger as an ideal match. Bose Chief Executive Officer Lila Snyder emphasized that as a privately held enterprise, Bose possesses the long-term investment freedom to expand its consumer footprint across diverse technological partnerships and brand portfolios. Meanwhile, Skullcandy Chief Executive Officer Brian Garofalow noted that joining forces with Bose allows the brand, originally founded on a Utah ski chairlift over two decades ago, to drastically elevate its product capabilities and global retail distribution while remaining authentic to its action sports roots.

Buying Skullcandy is another step in Bose’s multi-brand expansion strategy, following its acquisition of luxury audio stalwarts McIntosh and Sonus faber. For a taste of Skullcandy products mated with Bose tech, check these three options out:
  • Skullcandy Crusher 1080 ANC ($274.99)
  • Skullcandy Method 540 ANC ($119.99, usually $149.99)
  • Skullcandy Method 360 ANC ($99.99, usually $129.99)
