Age Of Empires Is Headed To Mobile Devices In Free-To-Play Form

Microsoft is planning to follow the money trail into mobile, albeit through a licensing play. KLab, a maker of smartphone games based in Japan, is building a free-to-play version of Age of Empires for Windows Phone, Android, and iOS devices. It's called Age of Empires: World Domination and it will feature "simple and intuitive touch controls" as you lead troops into a battle system that's been re-imagined for mobile.

Despite the simple controls, KLab promises the ability to deploy advanced tactics in battle. There will also be an online element in which you can challenge other players or team up with friends to conquer the world.

Details are fairly sparse at the moment, though KLab did reveal that you'll have access to over 100 legendary heroes to choose from. Examples include King Arthur, Cnut the Great, Joan of Arc, Attila the Hun, and others. Have a look:

Age of Empires: World Domination will initially debut on iOS and Android this summer, followed by a Windows Phone version sometime "in the future." In addition, Microsoft said in a statement that reports suggesting this licensing agreement extends beyond the AoE franchise are "incorrect."
