NVIDIA's Computex 2017 unveiling of the new GeForce GTX with Max-Q Design technology for laptops was presented with the usual charismatic polish and enthusiasm that the company's leather-clad CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang is well known for. Frankly, it seemed a little too good to be true. In one hand, Huang held a legacy 10-pound boat anchor of a gaming notebook, while in the other he held the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus, a sub-5 pound machine that's just 17.9mm thick. Extolling the virtues of the new ASUS notebook powered by a GeForce GTX 1080 with Max-Q Design technology, he pointed out that the new machine... Read more...
Ethereum mining is a big business these days, and the cryptocurrency is on the verge of besting Bitcoin in market cap. Given the fact that many enterprising consumers are using gaming graphics card to maximize their hash rate for Ethereum mining, some manufacturers are tweaking their existing hardware to cater to these miners. The latest is ASUS, which has announced its MINING Series graphics cards. ASUS has an AMD version, which is based on the RX 470 Polaris graphics architecture (MINING RX 470). It has a base clock of 926MHz and a boost clock of 1206MHz. 4GB of GDDR5 memory is included, and... Read more...
Despite cautionary push back from regulators and lawmakers, it is becoming increasingly clear that self-driving cars are the future. Development in the area has been proceeding at a breakneck pace. Even so, one has to wonder when exactly autonomous vehicles will become a reality, versus just a prototype. It could be sooner than you think thanks to a new partnership between Volvo, Autoliv, and NVIDIA. The two automakers have teamed up with NVIDIA to accelerate the advancement of self-driving car technology. As part of that alliance, they have set an ambitious goal of having production vehicles built... Read more...
Lenovo is on a mission to change the way you think about workstations. Just as we have seen in other PC categories, the trend is towards increasingly smaller machines. When it comes to workstations with Independent Software Vendor (ISV) certification, nothing out there takes up less space than Lenovo's newly minted ThinkStation P320 Tiny, which it built around a one liter form factor. The new ThinkStation P320 Tiny ties into Lenovo's PC as a Service (PCaaS) offering, which consists of a fully managed, fixed monthly cost subscription model combining hardware and services into a single solution. There... Read more...
With the Chinese dominating the charts when it comes to the world’s most powerful supercomputers, the United States is looking to leverage its homegrown talent to usher in next-generation exascale computing. The Department of Energy (DOE) Exascale Computing Project (ECP) is funding six of the country’s top chip firms in order to ensure U.S. leadership in the field. Those companies include AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, IBM and Cray. The six companies will have access to $258 million in funds that will be dispersed over a three-year-period. According to DOE, the funds will be used... Read more...
The so-called cryptocurrency market is booming, or at least parts of it are. One of the most popular digital currencies is Bitcoin. It recently topped the $3,000 mark for the first time since its debut in 2009, and had you owned just $27 worth at that time, you'd be sitting on $15,000,000. While volatile, the price just keeps going up over time. This has kept the mining market alive, and NVIDIA reportedly plans to capitalize on it by releasing specialized Pascal cards tuned specifically for digging up crytocurrencies. News of NVIDIA's plans can be found all over the web, though most reports trace... Read more...
In case it's not obvious enough at this point, NVIDIA is big on Destiny 2. That's despite the fact that the original wasn't even available for the PC, which shows that Destiny is a series that's long overdue on being available for the most powerful gaming platform going - #PCMasterRace.  At E3, NVIDIA has dozens of demo PCs scattered about, each equipped with a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti along with a 4K G-SYNC monitor, all fired up with Destiny 2 running on them. With this kind of show of support, it wouldn't be surprising to learn that Destiny 2 will become a "The Way It's Meant To Be... Read more...
As we reported yesterday, hardware OEMs are paying closer attention to the needs of consumers who partake in cryptocurrency mining. As of late, Ethereum, a new form of currency similar to Bitcoin, has been a hot topic. For example, ASRock is marketing its H110 Pro BTC+ motherboard, which features an huge array13 PCIe slots to be the foundation of a what could be a seriously powerful GPU-powered mining rig. And with 13 PCIe slots at your disposal, you’ll want to find some [relatively] affordable GPUs with enough processing grunt to make mining financially worth your while. Mitch Steves,... Read more...
With the popularity of upstart Cryptocurrencies like Ethereum on the rise and the value of well-established currencies like Bitcoin steadily increasing, there is new-found interest in Cryptocurrency mining. If you remember, a few years back, Cryptocurrency miners caused a shortage of AMD GPUs, which resulted in such high demand that what were supposed to be relatively affordable graphics cards ultimately sold at price points significantly above their MSRP. Over time, GPUs were supplanted by more power-efficient FPGAs and ASICs specifically designed for Bitcoin Cryptocurrency mining, but changes... Read more...
Plex is once again expanding its expansive list of features with the arrival of Plex Live TV — at least in beta form. Plex Live TV is immediately available to all Plex Pass subscribers, allowing customers to tap into free, over-the-air (OTA) digital broadcasts that can be accessed directly from the familiar Plex interface. Acer whet our appetites with by teasing its Predator Triton 700 earlier this year, but today we’re hearing more about the no compromises gaming laptop. Specifically, we’re learning that the Predator Triton 700 will be one of the first products to take full advantage of NVIDIA’s Max-Q Design. As Marco explained earlier today, Max-Q is a deft combination of GPU tuning, game optimization, and thermal management, which helps keep GeForce GTX 10-Series graphics cards operating at peak efficiency while under stress. Acer goes one step further, invoking NASA’s efforts with rocker design. “Max-Q, an integral... Read more...
NVIDIA CEO Jen Hsun Huang just delivered a keynote speech at Computex Taipei, during which he unveiled some new mobile technology designed to optimize game performance, in smaller notebook form factors than have been previously possible. NVIDIA calls the technology Max-Q Design, and it enables NVIDIA’s notebook partners to cram high-performance GPUs like the GeForce GTX 1080 into notebooks that are a fraction of the size of previous-gen offerings. Jen Hsun brought out a couple of system to illustrate the differences between older gaming notebooks and next-gen notebooks featuring Max-Q design.... Read more...
NVIDIA has been firing on all cylinders over the past year or so and has seen impressive growth in nearly all of its divisions, including gaming GPUs and its efforts in deep learning and artificial intelligence, two of the hottest fields in technology right now. The GPU maker's success has drawn the attention of SoftBank, a multinational telecommunications and Internet corporation in Japan, which just made a big time investment in NVIDIA.How big are we talking about? Try $4 billion, which gives SoftBank a 4.9 percent stake in NVIDIA. SoftBank is now the fourth-largest shareholder in the graphics... Read more...
For lightweight gaming and content creation chores such as photo and video editing on the go, pouring funds into a laptop with a high-end graphics chip is overkill. Even a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti can quite a bit more powerful than what some people need. To address that market, NVIDIA has gone and added a new mobile Pascal GPU to its lineup, the GeForce MX150. Hardcore gamers looking to crank up the visual quality settings in the most demanding games will want to look elsewhere, but for users who need more oomph that what integrated graphics provide, the GeForce MX150 is NVIDIA's answer. It is built... Read more...
