Samsung Solstice Smartphone Hits AT&T For $99.99
Another day, another new smartphone (or "featurephone," if you will) on AT&T's network. Today, Samsung Mobile is introducing its latest finger-friendly phone to grace America's largest GSM network, the Solstice. At first glance, the phone actually look a lot like the Samsung Instinct that did so well for Sprint last year, with a thin, polished design and a full 3" touch screen.
There's also a virtual landscape QWERTY keyboard, TouchWiz interface, one-touch access to frequently used applications and social networks through new widgets for Facebook, MySpace and Yahoo! oneSearch, 3G data support, AT&T Navigator and AT&T Mobile Music. Users can also anticipate support for MMS (something even the iPhone can't do on AT&T's network, for whatever reason), mobile email, IM and a 2MP camera with camcorder. Additionally, the Solstice includes an accelerometer that will automatically detect motion and the orientation of the device allowing for the use of richer applications and features, including autorotation of the display, motion sensing games and photo scrolling by tilting the device.
Additional key specifications of the Solstice include an MP3 player, video and audio streaming, preloaded games, Bluetooth and a microSD memory card slot supporting up to 16GB. Oddly enough, Samsung has seen fit to price this one at $99.99 on a 2-year agreement after all rebates (available August 2nd), which is exactly what the iPhone 3G is also selling for at AT&T. Call us crazy, but for $100, we're guessing folks will easily side with Apple's smartphone over this.
