Microsoft In Discussions To Buy Minecraft Maker Mojang AB For $2 Billion

There is no doubt that, at this point, the Xbox One needs a shot in the arm. While Microsoft has struck a deal with Square Enix for limited exclusivity over Rise of the Tomb Raider, Sony was able to hog the advertisement spotlight when it came to Destiny. Now Microsoft is reportedly looking to acquire Minecraft developer Mojang according to unnamed sources that talked to The Wall Street Journal.

According to its sources, WSJ says that the value of Mojang has been estimated to be more than $2 billion. A price that Microsoft could be willing to pay for the developer but, according to the unnamed source, both sides are still working out many of the details.

Microsoft’s Xbox One console has been lagging behind Sony’s PlayStation 4 since both launched during the holiday season last year. While Sony revealed that it has sold 10 million consoles worldwide, the last update received from Microsoft was back in April when it was revealed that 5 million Xbox Ones had been shipped to retailers.

Considering this, it is not surprising that Microsoft could be considering this deal. Especially since it would mean gaining control over the Minecraft series. Since June, it was reported that Minecraft had sold over 54 million units and is available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, mobile devices, and the PC platform. The developer also has two unreleased games still in development called Cobalt and Scrolls.

Neither Mircosoft or Mojang have commented on these unconfirmed reports though WSJ’s unnamed sources claim that the deal may come this week.
