Microsoft is on the verge of unleashing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and alongside that major OS update will be the launch of Windows Mixed Reality headsets. We've talked about these virtual reality/augmented reality headsets on numerous occasions, but now OEMs are ramping up preorders to coincide with the October 17th launch of the Fall Creators Update. The latest OEM to open preorders is Acer, with its dryly named "Windows Mixed Reality Headset". Acer says that its Head Mounted Display (HMD) works straight out of the box with Windows Mixed Reality-ready PCs, supports six degrees of freedom, and comes equipped with a 13-foot cable to give you more freedom when navigating virtual worlds....

Late last month, Microsoft and Valve announced that Windows Mixed Reality headsets would play nicely with SteamVR content. “Virtual reality enthusiasts know that Steam is a great place to enjoy cutting edge immersive experiences,” said Microsoft Technical Fellow Alex Kipman at the time. “We can’t wait to bring their content to you.” Unfortunately, it appears that this match made in virtual reality heaven will not arrive on October 17th, which is when the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and Windows Mixed Reality devices will officially launch. Although we first got a glimpse at Lenovo’s Windows Mixed Reality headset earlier this year, the company is now getting official with the device. Called the Lenovo Explorer, the headset is capable of being plugged into a supported Windows 10 PC, where users will be able to immerse themselves in virtual reality games and apps. The headset features two high resolution (1440x1440) displays, one for each eye, and supports Cortana voice controls. The headset will work in one of two modes. Its “Mainstream” option operates at 60Hz and requires at least a Kaby Lake Core i5 processors and an integrated Intel HD 620 graphics to operate. If you’ve been itchin’ to get your hands on new [relatively] affordable mixed reality hardware designed for Windows 10 PCs, the wait is nearly over. Microsoft today at Build 2017 announced that preorders are open for Windows Mixed Reality headset dev kits from Hewlett-Packard and Acer.
