NVIDIA isn't just a company that is known for its gaming products like the GeForce RTX Series; it has quickly made a name for itself with enterprise hardware and solutions to accelerate artificial intelligence operations. Today, NVIDIA announced a new partnership with the United States Postal Service (USPS) that will see the government agency adopting advanced AI technology to provide a 10x speed uplift in data processing at its mail centers. For starters, USPS datacenters will be upgraded to feature NVIDIA's potent V100 Tensor Core GPUs that are trained for multiple AI algorithms. From there, the USPS will deploy those algorithms with NVIDIA EGX edge computing systems at nearly 200 postal facilities... Read more...
Most of the time, when we hear about data breaches, it's because companies have either been compromised or failed to properly protect data. This time around, however, it's the United Postal Service in the limelight. Data on as many as 800,000 employees may have been stolen along with data on customers who called the USPS' various call centers between January and August of this year. USPS spokesperson David Partenheimer told Reuters that "The intrusion is limited in scope and all operations of the Postal Service are functioning normally." What appears to set this attack apart from most other intrusions is that the attackers apparently weren't interested in either identity theft or credit card... Read more...
There are generally two places the United States Post Office is willing to put your mug -- one is on the wall in the lobby featuring the FBI's "Most Wanted" criminals, and the other is on a postage stamp. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will occupy the latter in 2015 as one of several collectables for the year. He'll be in good company, too. Other collectable stamps in 2015 will feature Elvis Presley, James Brown, Robert Robinson Taylor, Johnny Carson, Ingrid Bergman, the Peanuts gang, science fiction writers, and others, including events. Steve Jobs already has a statue, and in 2015 he'll also have a stamp commemorating him. It's a bit unusual to be privy to stamp subjects so far ahead of time,... Read more...
The U.S. Postal Service has struck a deal with ecommerce juggernaut Amazon to deliver the latter’s packages on Sundays, which seems to be the perfect way for both parties to benefit at the expense of the competition. It’s no secret that the USPS has been in financial trouble for a while, and one idea for saving the agency money--ceasing delivery on Saturdays--seemed like a fruitless idea from the get go and would certainly be unpopular with consumers and businesses alike. USPS headquarters in D.C. Increasing the reach of its services while also opening up a huge pipeline of products to be delivered is a much better idea. Everybody wants Sunday deliveries, and as a New York Times piece... Read more...
It’s no secret that the USPS has been struggling financially. Last year, about 3,700 post office around the country faced the threat of closing, and most were eventually be spared by having their operating hours slashed considerably. Even so, there seem to always be rumblings about the USPS dropping Saturday mail delivery. Further, other delivery services including FedEx and UPS have done strong work, eating into business that the USPS would otherwise get. Someone over in the USPS headquarters has come up with a plan to become more competitive in the market it created, though. According to a document filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., the USPS will start testing... Read more...
The US Postal service has allegedly delivered an ultimatum to Netflix: Change your envelopes or pay $0.17 a piece.  While 17 pennies doesn't seem like a lot on the surface, that could impact their operating income/customer by as much as a reported 67%!“Not surprisingly, it sounds as if Netflix will bite the bullet and redesign the problematic mailer if the USPS is serious about the charges, so feel free to keep an eye out for a design change in the not-too-distant future.”The whole issue boils down to Netflix's use of “nonmachinable” packaging, which the USPS estimates has cost them $41.9 million in additional labor over the past 2 years.  Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night,...
