With a new like Predator, you should probably expect to be scared. And even for PC enthusiasts, the new Predator G5910 is mighty scary to look at. Acer's gaming beast has just been updated, and the component list is no joke. It's a towering tower, put together to offer superior gaming and multi-media performance for those with a) the space and b) the money. The tower itself is daunting, and a serious looked. It's also enormous, so it'll probably be reserved for those with 2-bedroom apartments (as opposed to those tight studios). But of course, if power's all that matters, we're sure even those in cramped quarters could find a way. As for design, the top surface is angled and houses a convenient... Read more...
Need a new tower for your desktop or workspace? Lenovo has a new one to consider. The ThinkCentre M75e Small Form Factor and ThinkCentre M75e Tower have just been announced, both of which are generally aimed at enterprise customers but could definitely work in just about any place of business, including your home office. The M75e is the first of Lenovo's M Series platforms to use AMD processors (Athlon II and Phenom II), and both are designed to handle two displays right out of the box without a discrete GPU requirement. But, if you add the ATI Radeon HD 5450 (512 MB), the M75e can drive four displays. Lenovo has also tuned this machine to boot up within 30 seconds, and it also has four DIMM... Read more...
What's half desktop, half beast, and more than you could ever afford? You're looking at it. NextComputing is a company with a history of creating super expensive, arguably portable desktops that are rugged to the core. The new Vigor Evo fits the bill, and it's definitely one of the strangest machines we have seen in recent memory. It was created for military and homeland security operations, which means that it's perfectly suitable for any wild forest mission you may have up your own sleeve. This is a "stand-alone" portable workstation, with three built-in HD monitors, multiple PCI Express Slots, up to 16GB of EEC RAM, one or two Xeon CPUs, internal storage for up to 11TB, an integrated 17" display... Need a new machine? Not content with the stock options out there? As any real modder and hacker would advise, you should probably consider an overclocking rampage. But not without some help, of course. Paired an overclocked CPU with a 3-way SLI graphics set ensures that you'll be getting serious... Read more...
The custom gaming PC business is still booming, and people are still looking for ways to get creative and make their own builds unique. Antec has been a long-time case and power supply maker, and the company's newest chassis is definitely one of the more interesting ones that have been introduced in recent years. It's called the LanBoy Air, and it's an open-air chassis that is designed quite differently from most. The case uses top-to-bottom mesh construction, which provides for tons of airflow. There are also five 120mm fans and space for ten more, and since it's huge, you can fit up to 11 total drives in here. It also holds your drive in suspension in order to reduce vibration, and chassis’... Read more...
The Femtocell. It's a strange name for a device, almost sci-fi like, but these units are becoming more and more popular around the globe as demand for mobile connectivity grows at a far faster rate than the one at which new towers are being erected. The femtocell is a fantastic solution to a problem that isn't going away any time soon, and if you aren't sure about what they are, here's a brief description: Sprint's Airave and AT&T's 3G Microcell are both femtocell devices. You plug these into your home broadband connection, and they create a miniature cell tower or sorts within your home. Now you have a small radius of 5-bar service where you previously had much less (or none at all). The... Read more...
When we sat down to review Corsair's acclaimed 700D and 800D chassis, we couldn't help reflecting on how much the PC case market has evolved over the last decade. Ten years ago, when we were cutting our teeth on CPUs with code names like Coppermine and Thunderbird, enthusiast enclosures were few and far between. In a market that's now literally teeming with options from a variety of established manufacturers, however, how do Corsair's brushed-metal beauties measure up? Let's find out... With the exception of Lian-Li, which was building $200+ all-aluminum nerd artwork even back then, the majority of the companies providing cases to the DIY market were busy churning out beige boxes with features that included: Complimentary Band-Aids 1x 80mm 6000 RPM rear fan with an acoustic profile carefully modeled after a Boeing 727 The option to install a front-mounted case fan... The most memorable case of the past year? That honor definitely goes to the Level 10 chassis from Thermaltake. But considering the super high price point, it's not exactly a case that most average consumers can touch. It's also huge, so that's yet another reason to take it in from afar. But we have to admit: the latest enclosure from NZXT is pretty high up on the "weird, but in a good way" list. If you've been looking for a new case to fit in your outdoor bungalow or mountain cabin, this might just be the one. The new Tempest EVO Camo is probably the most otherworldly case that we can recall seeing in awhile. It's half-camo, half-retro. We never really thought a camo case could be created with... Right now, my production PC is humming along under my desk. It’s built into a massive Antec P193 case, which is built like a tank. It’s relatively quiet, especially since I removed the 200mm side fan. As a hardware reviewer, my lab testing seems to revolve around large cases. I’ve got several test systems built into three Coolermaster Cosmos 1000s and a Cosmos 1000S. Moving these systems around takes some care, since it would be easy to throw out a back; dropping one on your foot would be no joy, either. I also have four other systems that are occasionally used for product testing, but mostly used as game systems. Most Friday nights, four to six people troop into the basement lab and play LAN... iBuyPower is a company generally associated with custom gaming PCs and notebooks. If you need a high-octane machine to handle the latest games, they're the company to turn to. What they aren't known for, however, are things such as this. Of course, you won't find us griping about a company spreading its wings and trying new things, particularly when it delivers something as unique and useful as the Internal USB Expansion System. The all new IES Controller system is a proprietary development designed to add all sorts of functionality to SFF boxes and machines that were left for dead (or the thrift store). Not only does this device enable front-panel USB ports to power devices such as iPods and... Read more...
Finding the right chassis for a system build is like setting up the foundation before building out the design of your computer and working your craftsmanship into the intricate details of component selection and configuration. Start with a good foundation that caters to your build requirements and you're bound to have a better overall end result when you hit the power switch to boot up for the first time. And though the average enthusiast might choose a larger full tower case with real estate to spare, for many there is also beauty in smaller, more space-efficient designs. We've covered our share of monster "gaming cases" here at HotHardware but we felt it was high time to look at something a... Read more...
