Expanding a recall dating back to 2008, Japanese automobile airbag manufacturer Takata Corp is doubling the number of recalls for its potentially lethal product in the U.S. from 16.6 million to approximately 34 million vehicles (about one in seven of the over 250 million vehicles on American roads), which makes it the largest such recall in American history.  The U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in conjunction with Takata state that the recall affects passenger- and driver-side airbag inflators that are installed in vehicles made by 11 automobile manufacturers.  “We are committed to continuing to work... Japan-based Takata Corporation isn't eligible for the Consumerist's Worst Company in America designation, as voted on by its readers, but that hasn't stopped the company from making all the wrong moves. Just a few weeks ago, the company stood accused of destroying test records that showed design flaws in its airbags, and now it's ignored the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's deadline to expand the recall of airbags that might be fatally flawed. In what could be one of the biggest violations ever, Honda Motor Co. admitted that it had failed to report more than 1,700 claims of injury or death to US regulators from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2014. Things aren't looking so good for Takata Corporation, the Japanese maker of automobile air bags serving about 20 percent the market. A recently discovered (and potentially deadly) defect in the design of certain air bags dating back to at least 2008 has already resulted in the recall of millions of vehicles,and now the company faces a lawsuit accusing it of covering up evidence that it knew about the defect for the past decade. The faulty air bags are believed to be responsible for at least four deaths. Airbag maker Takata Corp fessed up that there may be more defective air bags in the wild than previously thought. A defect in the driver-side air bag inflator has already been linked to at least four deaths and over a dozen injuries, along nearly 31,000 recalled vehicles by GM and Nissan, and now Takata is saying that it first began making airbags with the defect as far back as 2008. The flaw consists of a bad part that could cause the inflator to rupture. If that happens, the airbag explodes with more force than is usual, resulting in metal shards being thrown about inside the vehicle.
