It's about to be on like Donkey Kong in the phablet space. Following the recent launch of Apple's 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, Google is getting ready to release an even larger handset, one that even King Kong would say is big. It's the Nexus 6, codenamed Shamu (after the whale at SeaWorld) and successor to the 5-inch Nexus 5. The Nexus 6 will arrive with a 5.9-inch display, the biggest yet from Google (in a smartphone). It's also larger than the iPhone 6 Plus by 0.4 inches and even outsizes Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 by 0.2 inches. We suppose a smartphone as big as the rumored Shamu from Motorola (likely to be called Nexus 6 or Nexus X) is tough to hide, hence all the leaks to the web. The latest leak comes from an anonymous person who has been posting a supposed photo of the giant handset shown sitting next to an LG G3 device on at least two different forums. The picture shows the back of the beast with a hand-written label taped to it that reads, "Shamu." Above that is a button with a Motorola logo on it (some have surmised it's a fingerprint sensor, though it could be a shutter button to take selfies), and above that is the rear facing camera. While smartphone buyers are fixated on Apple's upcoming iPhone 6 launch, Motorola is getting ready to make a splash with Shamu, the rumored successor to Google's Nexus X (some have also speculated that Shamu could be the forthcoming Nexus 6). As the device gets closer to launch, two Shamu prototypes were spotted on Zauba, an Indian site that lists import and export information. According to the chart, Motorola imported two Shamu phablets to India back on August 20 for "demo purposes." It lists the value of each handset at 34,982 Rupees, which is about $578 in U.S. currency. The chart also reveals a model number for Shamu: Motorola XT1112. Source: Zauba Based on various reports and rumors, Shamu... Read more...
Get, it, “killer”? “Shamu”? Fine, never mind moving on: A rumor has emerged that Motorola may be developing a handset called “Shamu”, a 5.9-inch smartphone that could be a new Nexus device. Android Police says it sources further indicate that the device will have a fingerprint sensor and may be released in November (or thereabouts), and of course the Shamu name fits with Google Nexus codenames’ aquatic nomenclature. HTC Volantis (Credit: Android Police) Other recent rumors point to an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet possibly being made by HTC, codenamed Volantis, running the NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip. Given the curious status of the Nexus program, it’s interesting... Read more...
