The PlayStation Network outage and customer data thefts from earlier this year cost Sony an enormous amount of lost revenue and have spawned a veritable fleet of lawsuits. At least one of the company's insurance providers has panicked and is asking for a court ruling that would confirm it has no responsibility to cover any of Sony's expenses. The company, Zurich American Insurance Company (ZAIC), filed the request on Wednesday. Sony's PlayStation Network and Qriocity servers were apparently running obsolete, unpatched software, and had no firewall in place, both no-nos for any company, but definitely for a company as large as Sony, trying to run a cloud-based service. In testimony in front of Congress on Wednesday, Dr. Gene Spafford of Purdue University said that security experts monitoring open Internet forums were aware months ago that Sony was using outdated versions of the Apache Web server software, which "was unpatched and had no firewall installed." Renowned jailbreaker George Hotz, AKA geohot, has fled to South America, according to court documents filed by SCEA in the matter. Hotz is well known for jailbreaking the iPhone, but his issues with Sony Computer Entertainment America stem from jailbreaking the PS3. Not only is Hotz in South America, according to the filing, although he has handed over the hard drives which a California court ordered him to, in order to have data collected from them, he removed "integral components" from them prior to delivering them to a third party analysis agency.
