When I was younger—a lot younger—it seemed we were headed towards a future where flying cars would be the norm, a thought no doubt influenced by television (The Jetsons comes immediately to mind). That probably won't come to pass in my lifetime, though the widespread use of autonomous vehicles might. Several companies are invested in self-driving cars, including Apple, which not surprisingly is hoping to build the necessary technology in-house if a supplier doesn't step to the plate with an attractive offer. Apple has been working on technology for autonomous automobiles for several years now. Early on, rumors suggested that Apple would launch its own car, but those plans were rumored to have changed in 2016 when it turned its focus to autonomous auto software. A more recent report has claimed that an Apple car would launch by 2023. Whatever Apple is working on, it has a ways to go on its technology as a recent California DMV report listed Apple dead last in autonomous car disengagements. Apple has been very secretive about its work, but filings made with the recent round of layoffs shed some light on what Apple is whipping up. Last week we reported that Apple’s self-driving car project, code-named “Project Titan”, was experiencing a big shakeup. This week, however, it seems that Apple is trying to get the ball, or should we say tire rolling. Apple, has hired former QNX co-founder and chief executive officer Dan Dodge in order to further the project. Dodge is now part of a team headed by former Apple hardware chief Bob Mansfield. Dan Dodge at DevCon 2010Dodge co-founded QNX in 1980 as a student at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
