During his eight years in office as President of The United States, Barack Obama was often the target of barbs from once presidential hopeful (and former Arkansas Governor) Mike Huckabee. But today, we learned that there is only but so much torture that Huckabee can take, and there is at least one entity out there that is more deplorable than Obama in his eyes — folks, let’s give it up for Comcast! Huckabee took to Twitter to blow off some steam after Comcast missed a scheduled appointment to fix service issues. He started off by going for low-hanging fruit, comparing Comcast to United Airlines… yikes. Is @comcast the United AL version of cable/internet/phone? Has anyone else had DEPLORABLE... Read more...
Do you have something that you need to say to Mr. President? Is your preferred method of communications social media? Well, now you can message President Obama via Facebook. Reading letters from the public has been a tradition since the days of Thomas Jefferson. Abraham Lincoln actually held regular office hours in order to meet with people one-on-one. The White House began receiving phone calls in 1880 and emails in 1994. President Obama launched his own Twitter account, while the First Lady is on Snapchat. President Obama still reads ten letters a day, or “LAD's”. He responds with a handwritten letter to the correspondent. The president remarked, “And what’s interesting is not only do... Read more...
Ahmed Mohamed has had a whirlwind week. The teen brought a “homemade” clock to school to impress his teachers, but eventually was arrested when one teacher inquired about a beeping sound. When Ahmed revealed the clock, which was enclosed in a pencil case, he was sent to the principal’s office and later arrested over concerns that he had built a device that looked like a bomb. The picture of Ahmed in handcuffs is the catalyst for what launched Ahmed’s quick rise to fame and a media firestorm.I expect they will have more to say tomorrow, but Ahmed's sister asked me to share this photo. At the behest of President Obama, Federal Chief Information Officer Tony Scott yesterday issued Memorandum M-15-13 calling for the provision of government service for all Federal websites via HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure).  The HTTPS standard was described by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as a "great first step", this despite it being written off as a "top-down solution" by a database administrator for NASA.  Memorandum M-15-13 explicitly states that "All browsing activity should be considered private and sensitive." It also provides guidance to government agencies on transitioning to the HTTPS protocol, including the directive that all newly... Read more...
President Obama signed an executive order today that declares cyberattacks from foreign soil to be a national emergency and gives the United States new powers for defending against them. The executive order, titled “Blocking The Property Of Certain Persons Engaging In Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities” gives the federal government the power to hit foreign hackers with freezes on their U.S. funds and property. “Starting today, we’re giving notice to those who pose significant threats to our security or economy by damaging our critical infrastructure, disrupting or hijacking our computer networks, or stealing the trade secrets of American companies or the personal information of American... Following an interview with Re/code late last week, president Obama has managed to upset officials in Europe for a couple of rather blunt comments regarding America's success with the Internet. For starters, Obama claims that the EU's actions towards regulating the Internet is 'commercially-driven', and is the result of their companies being unable to compete with 'ours'. In perhaps his most blunt comment, Obama stated, "We have owned the Internet. Our companies have created it, expanded it, perfected it in ways that they can't compete. And oftentimes what is portrayed as high-minded positions on issues sometimes is just designed to carve out some of their commercial interests." While I think... Read more...
Silicon Valley is getting a visit from President Barack Obama today, where he will sign an executive order to promote cooperation between the government and tech companies in the fight against large-scale data theft. The order will create Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations (ISAOs), which would work with the Department of Homeland Security to prevent the sorts of mass security breaches that have rocked Anthem, Sony, Target, and others. The groups will share information about hackers in the hopes that they can better prepare to defend against attacks with the shared data. While the US Senate doesn’t seem to have a clue about net neutrality and the issues brought up in regards to the FCC, its “Fast Lanes” plan, and the issue of what the internet should be classified as, President Barack Obama seems to get it. The President announced his support that the internet be reclassified as a utility service in order ensure that the internet remain free and open. “’Net neutrality’ has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation — but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted,” said President Obama in a statement released this morning. “We cannot allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to...
