The wealth of ultraportable laptops continues to grow, and we're seeing a more varied array of options than ever before. Be it 2-in-1s like Asus' T300 Chi or a tablet-gone-laptop like Microsoft's Surface 3, those in the market for a mobile computer have plenty of options these days. We were all hyped up about Lenovo’s latest LaVie Z series of tablets and convertibles, which both went on sale this week. After all, both models — first announced at CES — offer 13-inch QHD displays, a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Even more impressive is that the LaVie Z (notebook) weighs in at just 1.87 pounds while the LaVie Z 360 (convertible) weighs only slightly more at 2.04 pounds. The new Lenovo LaVie Z HZ550 and LaVie Z HZ750 both shatter any expectations of what you previously thought was possible with a lightweight mobile device. The LaVie Z HZ550 is the world’s lightest 13.3-inch laptop, weighing in at an unthinkable 1.72 pounds — less than a 32-ounce bottle of water. Currently, there aren't very man netbooks (or notebooks, for that matter) out there with both an HDD and an SSD within, but those systems just got a tiny bit less rare. NEC has today announced its LaVie Light line of machines, making it the first Japanese PC maker to craft a netbook with an SSD + HDD system. A grand total of three machines will be launched in the LaCie Light line: the BL350/TA is the big winner, with the operating system loaded onto the SSD (for speed) and the HDD left empty for applications, media and other things that are less urgent.
