Yesterday afternoon, we reported on Huawei's rather suspect "optimizations" when it comes to its smartphones running 3DMark. The company was caught red-handed cheating by AnandTech, and UL took the drastic move to delist benchmark results for the P20, P20 Pro, Nova 3 and Honor Play. At the time, UL stated, "We found that the scores from the public 3DMark app were up to 47% higher than the scores from the private app, even though the tests are identical... This kind of detection and optimization is forbidden by our rules for manufacturers."  Following the news story blowing up yesterday and gaining widespread attention, cooler heads have prevailed and both UL and Huawei have... Late last month, Huawei unveiled its flagship P20 series which included the P20 and the P20 Pro. Now, the Chinese OEM is looking to bring some of that same design flair of the P20 family down to a more palatable price point, hence the new Honor 10. Like its pricier family members, the Honor 10 uses the flagship Kirin 970 processor paired with 6GB of RAM. On the display side of things, you'll find a 5.84-inch 2280x1080 LCD compared to the 2244x1080 LCD on the P20 (the P20 Pro tops them all with a 2240x1080 OLED display). 64GB of internal storage is standard (128GB optional), but there is no microSD slot for added expansion. In addition, the fingerprint is located on the front of the phone,... Read more...
It seems as though dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) hardware is seeping into more aspects of our computing hardware (see Apple iPhone X), and the latest evidence of that is with Huawei's new Mate 10 Series of flagship smartphones. There are two smartphones in the family: the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, both of which are powered by the new Kirin 970 SoC. Huawei bills this as the "world's first AI processor for smartphones with a dedicated Neural Network Processing Unit", although we'd probably think that Apple would take issue with the statement. Huawei says that this dedicated NPU gives the Kirin 970 the ability to offer a 25x boost in performance with 50x greater energy efficiency compared... Read more...
Huawei has been burning up the sales charts thanks to premium smartphone designs at attractive price points, along with strong sales in its home market of China. The smartphone company is looking to improve its standings in the market once again with the arrival of the Mate 10 Pro. New images of the smartphone have leaked out courtesy of Evan Blass. The notorious gadget leaker posted renders of both the front and back of the device in three colors: grey, blue and brown. In a bid to liven things up a bit, the Mate 10 Pro features a lighter shade band that cuts across the back of the device, encompassing the dual cameras and the LED flash. If anything, it breaks up the monotony that is typified... Read more...
Chinese phone and chip designer Huawei unveiled its first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone chipset, the Kirin 970. By combining the power of the cloud with the speed and responsiveness of the processor's native AI capabilities, Huawei claims it can give the competition a run for their money, including top-shelf mobile chipsets such as Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835, Apple's custom A11 SoC that will power upcoming iPhone 8 devices, and Samsung's Exynos family. "The Kirin 970 is faster, better and more secure than anything else available [in the market]. This is the latest technology and it is the first chip to have a neural processing unit inside, which is 20 times faster than a central processing... Read more...
