The Surface Book 2 is not a cheap laptop, with the least expensive 13.5-inch model checking in at $1,149. That configuration is built around an Intel Core i5-7300U processor, which is only a dual-core chip that is now a couple of generations old (Kaby Lake). However, rumor has it that Microsoft will soon be refreshing its entry-level model with a quad-core chip. We are living in a core-heavy world these days, in terms of what companies are peddling to customers. On the desktop side, for example, 8-core processors are commonly available, and it is not unusual to see laptops wielding 6-core silicon underneath the hood. As such, having just a dual-core foundation on a premium product is starting... Read more...
It appears that Intel is looking to make a run at AMD and its Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Ryzen processors in the lower end of the mobile market. Having already released quad-core Core i7 and Core i5 processor variants based on its Kaby Lake Refresh (Kaby Lake-R) architecture, a new dual-core Core i3-8310U processor based on Kaby Lake-R has leaked to the web, with a full spec sheet to boot. According to data gather up by Laptop Media, the Core i3-8310U sport two physical cores and four threads to throw at tasks. It has a 2.2GHz base clockspeed, which at first glance is not all that impressive considering that the 2-core/4-thread Core i3-7130U is clocked significantly faster at 2.7GHz. However, the... When Lenovo launched the Yoga 910, it was beautifully styled, powerful enough for most mobile users, and it offered reasonably good battery life. However, the public reception of the 2-in-1 convertible was a bit mixed and perhaps not quite what the company had hoped for. Some critics took issue with the Yoga 910's thermal characteristics, fan noise, and its awkwardly-placed upward-facing web cam. However, Lenovo took this feedback into consideration and developed the new Yoga 920 we'll be showing you here. From the outside, the Yoga 910 and 920 look similar at first glance, but there are a multitude of significant updates that improve the machine in a number of ways. Nestled inside an all-aluminum... We could have predicted that HP would refresh its laptop lineup after Intel introduced its 8th Generation Core processor family in mobile form (Kaby Lake Refresh, or Kaby Lake-R, not to be confused with Coffee Lake on the desktop). By extension, our crystal ball, if we had one, would have also told us the new lineup would be faster than the previous generation, especially in multi-threaded applications where upgrading from a dual-core 7th Generation CPU to a quad-core 8th Generation chip would pay the biggest dividends. But what we could not have foreseen is that subtle changes beyond swapping out the engine that drives its systems would add up to an appreciably superior experience. Spoiler—it... Read more...
Intel’s newest 8th generation Core processors are here and have delivered promising early results in our initial tests on the desktop, and more recently in Dell's XPS 13 laptop. The biggest change with Intel's 8th Gen Core Mobile processors comes by way of doubled core counts. This makes many of this new generation of Core i5 and i7 mobile chips true quad-core processors now, with support for up to eight threads with Hyper Threading, all within a 15W TDP target. This improvement does not come without trade-offs, of course, as we see base clocks dropped by up to 900MHz relative to each chip’s predecessor. However, Intel has also seen fit to keep boost clocks high and even increased... Read more...
Dell has not done much to tweak the physical design of its XPS 13 laptop over the past couple years, though it's not out of laziness or complacency. The past few models have exemplified excellence in engineering, with the size and weight of the XPS 13 belying what lays in wait when you crack open the lid. Its InfinityEdge display all but eliminates bezel and delivers a larger-than-expected viewing area based on the laptop's overall dimensions, and the hardware powering it has, for the most part, been cutting edge. In keeping with that latter theme, Dell upgraded its XPS 13 for late 2017 with a new 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor, specifically the Core i7-8550U, effectively doubling the... Read more...
Things have been relatively quiet on the Microsoft Surface hardware front for the past few months (at least with regards to new releases). Earlier this summer, Microsoft performed a brain transplant on the Surface Pro convertible and introduced the all-new Surface Laptop. However, an update for the Surface Book, which was first introduced in late 2015, was nowhere to be found. Fortunately, Microsoft has revealed that it will hold a keynote on October 31st at its “Future Decoded” event in London. As you might expect for a major announcement relating to Surface, division chief Panos Panay will be the chief presenter. Sources for The Verge indicate that at least once new product will be... Lenovo has a few new convertibles and detachables that it announced today at IFA, including two new Yoga devices and a new addition to the Miix family. Starting with the convertibles, we have the new flagship Yoga 920, which features a 13-inch form-factor. The Yoga 920’s 13.9-inch display can be configured with either a Full HD (1920x1080) or 4K (3840x2160) panel (both IPS touch screens). It’s also the first Yoga device to incorporate Intel’s new eight generation “Kaby Lake Refresh” processors, which provide four cores and eight threads for added productivity muscle. Standard configurations come with 8GB of DDR4 memory, but you can opt for 16GB. PCIe SSDs are standard across the board, available... Read more...
Acer wasted no time pouncing on Intel's 8th generation Kaby Lake Refresh (Kaby Lake-R)  processor lineup for ultrabooks and other thin and light systems. These new processor options are the foundation for Acer's next-generation Swift, Spin, and Switch models, and specifically the Swift 5 (ultralight), Spin 5 (convertible), and Switch 7 Black Edition (stylish detachable 2-in-1). "The new generation of Swift, Spin and Switch notebooks from Acer intersect functionality and mobility with the power and performance of Windows 10," said Peter Han, Vice President, Partner Devices and Solutions, Microsoft Corp. "Light, sleek and powerful, these notebooks are three great options for anyone that uses... Read more...
If you’re a regular reader of HotHardware, then you know that we are incredibly fond of Dell’s XPS 13 family of notebooks. They provide solid performance, tight construction and plenty of features to keep mobile warriors happy. To keep its winning streak alive, Dell has announced a significant processor upgrade from the XPS 13, bringing onboard Intel’s newest eight generation Core processors (Kaby Lake-R). By going with Kaby Lake-R, the XPS 13 ditches the dual-core processors of its predecessor and instead adopts quad-core, eight-thread Core i5 and Core i7 processors (i5-8250U, i7-8550U). Dell is promising up to a 44 percent increase in performance compared to the previous seventh-generation... Read more...
