BMW has been experimenting with alternative powertrains for quite some time, and has offered vehicle like i8 sports carand the funky i3 whatchamacallit(which is available in fully-electric and range-extending variants). Now, the company is looking to bring an electrified version of its hot-selling X3 crossover to market, and it will be called the iX3. The vehicle debuted in concept for today, and it retains the same basic shape as its gasoline-engined sibling. Most of the changes occur upfront where the twin kidney grille gives way to a version that sort of merges the two together. To our eyes, it reminds us a bit of a KIA grille, but we digress -- it's a false grille anyway given... Read more...
While Uber's autonomous driving trials are understandably on hold for the moment, computers Waymo is moving right ahead with new partnership to advance the field. Today, Waymo announced that it has signed an agreement with Jaguar to deliver up to 20,000 self-driving I-PACE electric crossovers over the next few years. Waymo's current fleet consists primarily of Lexus RX 450h Hybrid crossovers (which are being phased out) and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans. "Imagine a world where you can take a self-driving minivan to the baseball game with family, and a self-driving I-PACE home after a night out — in both cases, a car perfectly suited for your needs," said the Waymo Team in a Medium posting.... Unlike most concept-to-production transformations, not much has been lost here with respect to styling on the I-PACE. The vehicle advances Jaguar's current design language and applies it to a lifted four-door "coupe" profile (even though we hate the coupe term when used for anything but a two-door).  It's a forward-looking design, without looking somewhat tacky like the Hyundai Kona Electric. On the inside, the futuristic design trends continue... Read more...
Tesla isn’t the only automaker that’s staking a claim in the EV market. The American car company is getting some fresh competition from an unlikely source: Jaguar Land Rover (JLV). The British luxury and sports car maker tonight unveiled the segment-busting I-Pace Concept electric vehicle (EV), which looks like Jaguar’s take on SUV “coupes” like the BMW X4 and X6. The I-Pace -- the company's very first EV -- definitely shares its design language with current Jaguar vehicles, including the XE, F-Type and F-Pace. It’s not an overly aggressive design by any means, but it still manages to avoid the eye-searing blandness (or hideousness) that is often associated with today’s dedicated EVs and hybrids....
