We've been hearing about the Hyperloop transport system for quite some time, and for some of us, the wait has been to just see the technology successfully tested. Well, that time has arrived, as a mere three years following the founding of Hyperloop, a test was pulled off without issue in the desert north of Las Vegas. But, while "without issue" is indeed true, the top speed reached isn't anywhere near what Hyperloop could ultimately achieve: about 750KM/h. This test instead capped at 160KM/h (100MPH), which in itself would still be quite fast (versus highway speeds) given the fixed path. Brogan BamBrogan, a former SpaceX engineer who co-founded Hyperloop One, called the test a "major milestone"....

Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk couldn't stop talking about the future of transportation in 2013, and specifically about Hyperloop, an ultra high-speed vacuum transport system that could shuttle you to your destination at a frighteningly fast pace (think in the neighborhood of 800 miles per hour!). Though things have been quiet on the Hyperloop front as of late, Musk is still determined to see the project through, starting with a test track in Texas. There aren't a ton of details to go on at this point, but through a series of Twitter posts, we know that Musk is planning to build a Hyperloop test track for companies and student teams to test out their prototype pod designs....

The eventual success of Elon Musk’s proposed Hyperloop transportation system that promises to offer fast mass transit in record time is by no means assured, but there continues to be steps taken toward that end. After Drs. Marco Villa and Patricia Galloway signed up for the project, the team formed an actual company called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, and they have a plan. There are four sections to the project--System, Capsule, Tube, and Manufacturing, Integration, and Test--and each section will have a lead that works under Villa and Galloway. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a dreamer, but he also has a lot of money, some serious brain power of his own, and now he also has the support of the crowdsourced JumpStartFund and two engineers with impressive resumes that are going to help him create his Hyperloop transportation system. The project will be headed up by Drs. Marco Villa and Patricia Galloway. Villa was the former director of SpaceX mission operations, and Galloway was the first woman President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), among numerous other achievements. In the technology arena there are leaders and visionaries. Many people have described men like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates as visionaries and market-changing leaders. Then there's another class of people in technology - the inventors. These folks are visionaries, leaders and in most cases, genetically wired geniuses. Tesla, Einstein, Edison, (Wozniak, Page and Brin?) these are the names of men that brought about technologies so disruptive and influential that they changed the landscape forever. We've covered Elon Musk's proposed Hyperloop before, including some speculation on what kind of system he might propose. The mass transit concept unveiled today is similar, in some respects, to the evacuated vacuum tube first proposed by the Rand Corporation in 1972, but varies in a number of key areas. It doesn't rely on maintaining a full vacuum, but instead offers an atmosphere roughly 1/6 pressure found on Mars, or equivalent to cruising Earth at 150,000 feet. As expected, the initial LA - SF proposed run would accelerate passengers to trans-sonic velocities, but they wouldn't do it using maglev. The dream of incredibly fast mass transit is alive, at least in the mind of Elon Musk. Fortunately, Musk is a brilliant fellow with piles of money, so if anyone can pull it off, it’s him. Musk discussed his vision for a Hyperloop transport system a month ago, and many have been clamoring for a more fleshed-out version of what exactly this thing might look like and how it would work; one musn’t simply throw out the concept of up to 4,000 MPH travel, making a transcontinental trip last no more than 45 minutes or a trip to China a two-hour affair, without backing it up with something. That's not something we're likely to see in our lifetime, however we may witness the completion of several "Hyperloop" transport systems designed to get you from point A to point B at breakneck speeds.
