A new dynamic duo is forming in Silicon Valley. Hugo Barra, the former Android executive who left Google and took a position at Chinese firm Xiaomi around three and a half years ago, is returning to U.S. soil to team up with Mark Zuckerberg on his virtual reality efforts. Barra joins Zuckerberg and the rest of Facebook as the new Vice President of Virtual Reality, or VPVR for short, and will lead the Oculus team. It has been an interesting journey for Barra. He surprised many in the tech industry when he traded his job at Google to go overseas to work for a mobile device firm. Many people in the tech industry were shocked when former Android executive Hugo Barra decided to abandon Google 3.5 years ago to take a position at Chinese firm Xiaomi. At the time, Barra said that he was ready to start a “new career chapter”, coming aboard Xiaomi as the company’s International Vice President. Does Xiaomi's Mi 4 handset bear a resemblance to Apple's iPhone 5? You betcha, and Xiaomi boss Hugo Barra isn't ashamed to admit as much. However, he's not willing to concede that Xiaomi is stealing Apple's designs, as famed design chief (for Apple) Jony Ive once alleged when stating the similarities between products isn't "flattery," but "theft." Chinese startup Xiaomi has risen in the ranks as a maker of premium Android smartphones that sell for less than what Samsung charges. And like Samsung, Apple takes issue with Xiaomi's designs. Google is losing one of its major figure heads for the Android the platform. After nearly five years at Google and almost three and a half years serving the Android team, Hugo Barra tendered his resignation as he embarks on a "new career chapter" in China, Barra announced on his Google+ page late last night. "In a few weeks, I'll be joining the Xiaomi team in China to help them expand their incredible product portfolio and business globally -- as Vice President, Xiaomi Global," Barra stated.
