GE has announced that it has a new jet engine that has lifted off for the first time. The maiden flight of the GE9X jet engine happened on March 13 and it was hung under the wing of GE Aviation's 747 flying testbed in Victorville, California for the flight. One glance at the images and you can see just how massive the new GE9x engine is compared to the legacy engines that are slung under the wings of the 747. GE is designing the massive engine specifically for the Boeing 777X aircraft and the engine makes 100,000 pounds of thrust. The engine flew for over four hours on its maiden flight and was able to complete the entire test card and was validated for operational and functional characteristics.... Read more...
NVIDIA has now announced that it is extending a long-term partnership with GE Healthcare to bring artificial intelligence (AI) technology to over 500,000 imaging devices that are used at health facilities around the globe. According to GE, over 50 petabytes of data are generated annually by the average hospital from medical images, clinical charts and sensors. However, the company says that less than three percent of the data accumulated is "actionable, tagged or analyzed". NVIDIA has made a name for itself in the AI field with its Tesla family of deep learning GPU accelerators, and has signed up scores of partners with its AI-fueled DRIVE PX family. Its DRIVE PX products empower self-driving... Read more...
GE and Amazon are hoping to light up your life. The two companies just released more information about their Alexa-powered smart lamp, including a new name, release date, and price tag. Jeff Patton, General Manager of Connected Home Products for GE Lighting, remarked at the product's announcement six months ago that, “It’s really about simplifying and extending an experience for consumers, allowing them to add smart capabilities throughout the home through a really simple form factor Consumers don’t need a cell phone, a special switch or a hub. They just need their voice.” The unique lamp, originally referred to as C by GE, has been renamed C by GE Sol. The new name reflects the lamp’s unique... Read more...
Microsoft clearly missed an opportunity here; just look at GE Lighting’s new LED table lamp (yes, that what it’s being called now). It looks just like the Cortana ring that you would find within Windows 10 or Windows 10 Mobile (or perhaps like one of those hipster Dyson fans). But instead, the GE LED table lamp has Amazon Alexa Voice Service (AVS) infused its base. As a result, the device has a built-in microphone and speaker for feedback and playing music, although expect to hear audio quality more in line with the diminutive Echo Dot. So rather than having a tall, cylindrical object reminisce of the alien ship in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home sitting on your end table, you actually have a useful... Read more...
Microsoft's been laser focused on the cloud as of late, and in particular the growing Internet of Things (IoT) market that's comprised of Internet connected devices. With an eye towards the industrial side, Microsoft and GE are partnering up to bring the latter's Predix platform to the former's Azure cloud service. It's the first step towards what the two companies envision as a broad strategic collaboration. "Every industry and every company around the world is being transformed by digital technology,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement. "Working with companies like GE, we can reach a new set of customers to help them accelerate their transformation across every line of business... Read more...
