Just over a year after its debut, Exploding Kittens remains the project with the most backers in Kickstarter history, tallying nearly 203,000 supporters who pledged a combined $8.7 million (and change) to the card game. Since then, Exploding Kittens has made the jump from physical to digital, first with a release to iOS and now to Android devices as well. If you're not familiar with the project, Exploding Kittens is a humorous card game that's somewhat akin to Russian Roulette. Players draw cards hoping to avoid an Exploding Kitten, otherwise they're dead and out of the game. That is, unless the player has a coveted Defuse card, in which case they can wipe their brow and live to play another... Read more...
Exploding Kittens, at one time the most monetarily funded project on Kickstarter and still the record holder for attracting the most backers, is now available to purchase as an app in Apple's App Store. It's proving just as popular in app form, having risen to the top spot after just one day, leapfrogging Minecraft: Pocket (No. 2) to get there. From the humorously warped mind of Matthew Inman of the hugely popular The Oatmeal comic, he and co-creators Eland Lee (Xbox, ARGs) and Shane Small (Xbox, Marvel) conceived the card game, offering backers a regular deck and a Not Safe For Work (NSFW) edition. The object is to be the last person standing, which you accomplish by avoiding or defusing a limited... Read more...
Records are meant to be broken, but who would have though a card game called "Exploding Kittens" would be the one to dethrone Ouya as the most funded project Kickstarter has ever seen? Well, it happened, with Exploding Kittens erupting to $8,782,571, beating Ouya's record by more than $213,000. It also attracted more than three times as many backers at 219,382. In case you're wondering, that's more than double the number of the backers for the second most backed Kickstarter project of all time -- Bring Reading Rainbow Back for Every Child, Everywhere!, which attracted pledges from 105,875 people. As can happen when you pit cats against, well, anything and anyone, it was a bloodbath in terms of... Read more...
Try wrapping your head around this one -- the most backed campaign in Kickstarter history is a card game called Exploding Cats. Go ahead and read that as many times as you wish, just be warned it won't ever make sense. Nothing does anymore, so rather than try and figure out how and why Exploding Kittens was able to turn a crowdfunding site on its head, let's just roll with it. We'll get to the details of the game in a moment, but first let's appreciate some stats. Here's a project that reached its modest goal of $10,000 and became fully funded within the first 20 minutes. It raked in 10 times that amount in less than an hour, and is now approaching $5 million in funding from nearly 126,000 backers... Read more...
