Though Bill and Melinda Gates have been the faces of philanthropy among tech circles, Google stepped up to the plate by matching user donations two-to-one to help fight the Ebola epidemic. Google began urging its users to donate to one of its partners a week ago, offering to match every dollar with $2 of its own, and it's been a success. In a short time period, Google reached its limited of a combined $7.5 million, $2.5 million of which came from user donations an the other $5 million from Google itself. Props go out to Reddit, the popular social news and entertainment website comprised of user-submitted content, for deciding to donate 10 percent of its advertising revenue in 2014 to charity. In keeping with the spirit of the community, Reddit's users will be the ones who determine which 10 non-profits receive a slice of the pie. "Whether it's a large ad campaign or a $5 sponsored headline on Reddit, we intend for all ad revenue this year to benefit not only Reddit as a platform but also to support the goals and causes of the entire community," Reddit stated in a blog post. In what is being hailed as an unprecedented mobile response to a natural disaster, U.S. cellphone users have donated more than $11 million to Haitian earthquake relief efforts. Wireless carriers such as Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have waived fees for customers who want to send mobile donations.
