Few topics are as divisive as politics and religion. The advent of display notches on smartphones may not quite reach the same level of contention during Thanksgiving dinners, but it certainly attracts outspoken individuals who are all too eager to share their opinions on the subject. It may one day be moot, though, as even Apple might be getting rid of the notch, starting with its 2020 iPhone models. Over the past few months we've heard some pretty interesting rumors about Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship. One of the rumored features that is most likely to come to fruition is the inclusion of an in-display fingerprint sensor, replacing the rear-mounted sensor on current Galaxy smartphones. It used to be that nothing was certain but death and taxes, to quote Benjamin Franklin (who wasn't actually the first to point this out, but is probably best known for the phrase). After plenty of months of teasing (starting with a concept that was unveiled at CES 2018), Vivo has finally pulled the wraps off its next smartphone: the Nex. The Nex is the production version of the previous Apex concept and manages to achieve the holy grail when it comes to smartphone design: a near bezel-less display. The Nex has a tiny bezel at the bottom, but is otherwise a near bezel-free exercise along the sides and the top. We'll forgive the minuscule bottom bezel given that Vivo hasn't joined the "trendy" display notch bandwagon. Samsung, don't give in!! We've seen a number of manufacturers embrace the "display notch" when it comes to the 2018 refresh of flagship smartphones. Up until this point, Samsung has stayed the course, delivering the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+with traditional Infinity Displays. However, a newly uncovered design patent shows that Samsung could be pulled to the Dark Side with future Galaxy smartphones. The images in the design patent show a device with minimal display bezels and a notched display at the top that houses the selfie camera, speaker and various other sensors.
