When we first wrote about Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night about two years ago, the game had become an instant Kickstarter success. But even at that time, we did not foresee the game's true potential. After funding completed, the project received a staggering $5.5 million, a huge leap over the requested $500,000. There are a couple of good reasons for why Bloodstained performed so well with crowdsourcing. Koji Igarashi of Castlevania fame is getting back in the game development saddle, though he's not designing another Castlevania title, nor is his next project for Konami. You may recall that he left Konami just over a year ago to form his own studio and for the opportunity to develop the types of games he wants. And what he wants is a throwback to the side-scrolling platformer days, which he's resurrecting through Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.According to Igarashi, he's found partners willing to support his vision with funding, but only if he can prove there remains a demand for side-scrolling platformer titles.
